Schreiber Unhappy With 'Squirrel-like' X-men Action Figure

Actor Liev Schreiber is disappointed with the action figurine of his X-men Origins: Wolverine character - because the toy looks like "an angry squirrel".

Schreiber plays Victor Creed, who eventually adopts the mutant alter-ego of Sabretooth, opposite Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in the box office smash.

But the 41-year-old is not completely happy with the plastic figurine of Sabretooth, likening the doll to the bushy-tailed tree creature.

He says, "I have one complaint about it, not that I'm not excited to finally have an action figure after all these years, but I want to know what compelled the designers of this action figure to - I'm assuming they read the plotline for the movie and saw that I play this prehistoric game cat - but what possessed them to make me look like an angry squirrel? You can almost see the nuts (in the mouth)!"

However, Schreiber's eldest son with actress Naomi Watts doesn't share his father's view - the Sabretooth doll is one of 21-month-old Alexander's favourite play things: "He has a bag of toys, that he calls the turtle bag, that he puts his favourite toys in and it took a tense 15 minutes (before he put it in the bag)."

This weekend, ScreenCrave sat down with Liev Schreiber to talk about his upcoming role in Defiance, (full interview to come) and was lucky enough to grab some info about his role as Sabertooth in the upcoming Hugh Jackman movie, Wolverine.

Liev knew that even though some fans were reluctant about him playing Sabertooth, he was confident that he could stand toe to toe with Jackman. Below he talks about his research, reading the comics, taking on the role, and even some new footage that he’s seen. Check it out…

Do you find it fun being an action guy?

Yeah! What’s the fun? Haven’t you ever played cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians? I don’t think men really grow pass 22 intellectually. Physically we just get older and we’re less capable of doing the things you want to do, but you never stop wanting to do them.

How much fun was Wolverine for you?

Insanely fun. I felt very self conscious originally because I knew the fans didn’t like the idea of me playing Sabertooth?

Really?

I think I’m perceived as a kind of urbane, New Yorker. Maybe I’ve done too many movies with Jewish characters or something. They’re like “It’s like Woody Allen playing Sabertooh.” And I’m like no actually it’s not. I’m 6′3” I’m bigger than Hugh Jackman, I can do this.

Could you take him?

I could take him yeah. No I really can! In fact I do! But the reality is, since I’ve known him and I’ve known him a long time, Hugh has become this colossal man. He’s huge! Just muscles everywhere and I have to play this guy who whoops his ass. So, as soon as I finished Defiance, I began this kind of four month training period of weight lifting, this kind of genocide of chickens phase of my life where I just got bigger and bigger and bigger and it was awful, but amazing and fun. Then when I finally got there and got to choreograph the fights with Hugh and get on the wire and do the work, it’s not just that it was fun, I saw some of the footage, and it’s pretty cool.

You’re listed as two different characters in the film Victor Creed and Sabertooth what is that about?

[Evil Laugh] Victor Creed is Sabertooth. I just wanted everyone to know I got a name.

Did you read the comics?

Oh I read the comics before I got offered the part. I knew the character really well. Initially I had been asked to play Striker, and I asked, “do you think there is any way I could play this Victor Creed guy?”

The research that I did, Victor’s particular mutant issue, has nothing to do with his name “Sabertooth” but that’s where I decided to start. What is Sabertooth. How do they move? What are their behavioral characteristics? And I knew this stuff from the comic. I knew that he was a completely savage street fighter and that, that was his MO. But, what I hadn’t seen in some of the earlier films that I was interested in trying to pursue. Is what drives the guy, and instead of saying this guy is just a violent brute, what is the cocktail that makes the brute tick. Hopefully people will like it.

Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Logan, the mutant who eventually becomes Wolverine and a member of the X-Men as he seeks revenge against Victor Creed for the death of his girlfriend. Taylor Kitsch is Gambit in Wolverine!

Scooper 'Chaos Bringer' has revealed on Superhero Hype!'s message boards that "Friday Night Lights" star Taylor Kitsch will play Gambit (AKA Remy LeBeau) in director Gavin Hood's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Kitsch has signed a three-picture deal.

He'll be joining Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Liev Schreiber (Sabretooth), Danny Huston (William Stryker) and Lynn Collins (Silver Fox) in the 20th Century Fox release, opening May 1, 2009.

Huston is Stryker in Wolverine

JoBlo has learned that 30 Days of Night star Danny Huston will play William Stryker in 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He joins Hugh Jackman (Logan/Wolverine) and Liev Schreiber (Victor Creed/Sabretooth) in the "X-Men" spin-off directed by Gavin Hood and coming to theaters on May 1, 2009.

In X2: X-Men United, Brian Cox played an older version of the William Stryker character.

The photo shows Jackman dressed in a familiar black leather outfit complete with his loganesque side-burns. In the full pic, he's standing next to two fans.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is currently shooting in New Zealand tells the story of Logan's Weapon X beginnings and how he became the adamantium laced Wolverine. They're keeping casting for this one under lock and key at the moment, but we do know that Liev Schreiber is involved, most likely playing Victor Creed, aka Sabertooth, and that Aussie actor Christian Clark joined the cast in an unspecified role not long ago. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is due out in theaters on May 1, 2009.

Possible Wolverine Scene Details?

According to an unconfirmed source, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE has been busy filming in Dunedin, New Zealand for the last two days on a set called ‘Cassidys Bar’. The set is the grounds for a major fight scene between Victor Creed (Sabertooth) and Logan (Wolverine). The bar is in the shape of a barn with large doors at the front.

In the scene, Logan is thrown the entire legnth of the bar (about 60 feet) through the large front barn style doors. The bar itself seats about 50 people and has a large bar at the far end running alongside the entire wall, with trucks and a snowmobile parked.

Who is Schreiber Playing in Wolverine?

CHUD is reporting that Liev Schreiber is playing Victor Creed (AKA Sabretooth) in the Gavin Hood-directed X-Men Origins: Wolverine and not a young Stryker as was previously believed.

The site adds that Michael C. Hall ("Dexter") is instead in talks for the role of Stryker and that they are eyeing Michelle Monaghan for Silverfox.

Wolverine Production Using the Queenstown Fun Centre

The Otago Daily Times has published an interesting report, which mentions that the X-Men Origins: Wolverine production will be using the Queenstown Fun Centre Limited:
Queenstown may be preparing itself for Hollywood fever as filming for Hollywood blockbuster X-Men Origins: Wolverine nears, but one group of Queenstown residents has been left high and, quite literally, dry, with the production studio renting the Queenstown Fun Centre.
The Otago Daily Times understands the ice was taken off the rink recently and the surface will remain dry possibly until March.
Rumours are circulating the Fun Centre may be earning as much as $4000 a week for the rental.

Talk of a Wolverine movie have been ongoing since (I think) right after X2 came out, and the project has been moving forward (slowly but surely) since that time. Now comes word from Variety that the Hugh Jackman spinoff project has claimed a release date, changed its title (slightly), and promises some new mutants that we haven't seen yet ... as well as some old young friends.
