Deadpool Creator Talks Deadpool Solo Project - Screen Rant

A Deadpool project has been in the air since David S. Goyer (writer of Blade-Trilogy, Batman Begins/The Dark Knight) did a script while Blade was in production, but now with X-Men Origins: Wolverine a few weeks from release, buzz of a solo flick has ramped up. Deadpool creator Robert Liefeld recently chimed in, adding fuel to the fire.

Liefeld is the mastermind behind a few pivotal characters besides Deadpool: he’s the reason why Marvel has Cable and X-Force. Though he’s faced criticism in the comic book industry, lately he’s been dabbling in a little screen writing and being involved with film. Via Twitter, he’s posted a few notes about the upcoming Wolverine origin piece and Deadpool’s solo arc.

Also, talked to producers of ‘Wolverine’ yesterday and they said that there are definite plans to spin off ‘Deadpool’ if the box office works

He also reminded us that the leaked Wolverine workprint is incomplete.

“The Deadpool re-shoots with Ryan Reynolds aren’t in the bootlegged version. audience test response warranted more Deadpool in the pic!”

Now I’m all for a solo movie of the “Merc with a Mouth,” he deserves one. But I’m also inclined to be skeptical. From the footage screened, and the whispers of plot details heard, the movie version of Deadpool manifests very differently than his comic book counterpart. That’s not a good thing. Aside from Deadpool’s signature black comedy, he’s uniquely the only character in the Marvel Universe who knows he’s in a comic book. The recently released video profile of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool didn’t really feel like it did the necessary research of the comics. The essence is there, but it’s very faint.

Fox could always re-tell his story through the solo project and “fix what they’ve done,” but previous interviews have Reynolds saying he is the character that eventually becomes Deadpool. If they want to really pursue a Deadpool spinoff, they cannot ruin the character or a boycott is sure to ensue.

Nevertheless, Liefeld insures us the character is intact–via the 140-character Twitter format.

“The question I am getting asked the most nowadays, especially at conventions, is how do I feel about Deadpool in the ‘Wolverine’ movie

My answer is, I’m thrilled he’s in the movie, his character is true to the comic and I’m pleased with how he is presented. But I also remind

everyone that the movie is called “Wolverine” and not Deadpool. I hear rumors that they put more Deadpool in the final cut. fingers crossed

It’s also cool to see Gambit coming to the big screen, he looks cool, feels like 90’s all over again. Next up….Cable? Domino….? Please.”

I’d love to see a comic book character that knows he’s now in a movie, but if Watchmen is a sign, niche comic books don’t make “successful” films (that is, in box office terms).

David Goyer Says Fox Cautious on Green Lighting 'Magneto'

Despite previous comments from producer Lauren Shuler Donner that she’s eager to get started on X-Men Origins: Magneto, writer/director David S. Goyer is taking a more cautious approach. He told Collider that 20th Century-Fox was likely to await the box office results from X-Men Origins: Wolverine which doesn’t open until next May. As a result, the movie could not possibly shoot until fall 2009.

He did say that the story would be set in 1961 and “shows Professor X (Charles) and Magneto (Eric) as best friends and they team up against another person in the movie.”

His next project is an original horror film, The Unborn, opening next month. His next project is an original thriller, The Invisible Woman. He will also produce and direct the pilot for ABC’s Flash Forward based on Robert J. Sawyer’s novel.

'Magneto' Movie Depends on 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' Success

'Magneto' director David S. Goyer reveals that 'X-Men' spin-off movie about Eric Lehnsherr is put on hold to see what will happen with 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'.

Though updated reports earlier claimed that "Magneto" is still in the work, director David S. Goyer revealed the contrary. Talking to Superhero Hype! on Thursday, December 11, the filmmaker fessed up that the spin-off of the "X-Men" series has been put on hold as for the moment since the studio want to firstly see how "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" does.

Hinting that the script has been finished, the co-writer of "Batman Begins" said of the matter, "I think they like the script and they're just waiting to see what happens with 'Wolverine'." He further explained, "I don't think they would consider moving forward until the movie comes out."

Directed and penned by David S. Goyer, "Magneto" is said to chronicle the story of a young Magneto who seeks revenge on the Nazis who killed his family while befriending a young Charles Xavier. It is yet to have any actors attached to the project. Apart from "Magneto", another 20th Century Fox's "X-Men Origin" movie, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", is on its way to the big screen. It will be released in U.S. theaters on May 1, 2009.

We all know Fox is putting a whole lot of faith in the upcoming Wolverine: Origins, and Hugh Jackman is running around talking about how he'd like to play Wolvy forever and ever. But apparently the studio is being a little more cautious before they greenlight any more stories about the X-Men, waiting first to see how Jackman and his sideburns.

That's why David S. Goyer, who wrote a script about Magneto's early days, won't be working on that one next. Instead, he told Collider, he'll be taking on his sequel to the H.G. Wells classic The Invisible Man. No, it has nothing to do with his widely hated ghost movie The Invisible. It picks up where the first one left off, following the original main character's nephew as he perfects the powers of invisibility and gets unwanted attention from Scotland Yard in the process.

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner told Indie London that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is “very good. I’m very pleased with it. It’s very much an origins story. It’s very much in the tone of the first X-Men.”

As for the next Origins project, she said, “We have a great script on Magneto. I’ll tell you the honest truth… I’ve made four movies this year and I was so busy that I didn’t at all talk to the studio while making Magneto because I couldn’t have done it. And David Goyer, who wrote and is going to direct it, also did another movie. So now, he’s done with his and I’m done with two of mine, so when I get back that’s my first order of business to say: ‘Come on, let’s go and make Magneto'.”

Conceptual Artist Gives Magneto Update

You know things are a little quiet on a movie when the first update in months comes from someone who draws for a living. Anyhow, character designer Aaron Sims spoke to Splash Page about the current status of X-Men Origins: Magneto.

“Unfortunately, because of the writers strike, it got pushed off,” Sims said. “But they’re now back to the rewrites.”

Since “X Men Origins: Magneto” is still in conceptual form, it’s too soon to say much about it, except that obviously, like Wolverine , it will be an origin story — “where he started, where he got his powers, the very beginning.”

“Remember the scene [from 'X-Men'] in the concentration camp where you see Magneto as a young boy? It just continues from there,” Sims said. “Some people thought that might be too dark, but I really like that. It’s a lot of death and mayhem.”

Magneto won’t be the only mutant — just like in “Wolverine”, there will be new mutants aplenty to keep Sims busy coming up with something to please and yet surprise the fans. “The fan base has a vision of what they should look like, and that’s always the challenge,” Sims said. “It was the same with ‘The Hulk.’”

But since director David Goyer is still finishing “The Unborn” and also has several other movies on his plate (from “The Invisible Man” to “Super Max” to “Baltimore”), Sims doesn’t have to realize his character designs too quickly.

“David’s like me,” Sims laughed. “He works nonstop. He’s not one of those kinds of writers or directors who ever stops. I’m surprised he has any time at all. But I’m fortunate to work with directors like him who I admire. I can’t say no to him.”

I’m not too sure what Fox are thinking regarding Magneto. If X-Men Origins: Wolverine is successful does that mean they will focus entirely on a new Wolverine trilogy? Or will they green light Magneto as Wolverine has proved single character movies can work?

(Note to Fox: If David Goyer is busy directing other movies why not get someone else onboard? It’s not as though he is the best man for the job anyway!)

David Goyer May Bump ‘Magneto’ To Make Way For ‘Invisible Man’

David Goyer is a busy man these days. Making the most popular film of the year, and one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, will do that to a guy.

Now, the “Dark Knight” screenwriter is hoping to capitalize on his success with such recent superhero scripts as “The Flash” and “X-Men Origins: Magneto,” which he’ll also direct.

“That may be next,” he told us recently. But first, Goyer revealed, he hopes to vanish for awhile.

“I’m writing a new version of ‘The Invisible Man’ for Universal,” said the red-hot writer/director, who was at Comic-Con recently to promote “The Unborn,” a horror flick due in theaters next year. “I’m in the process of doing ['Invisible Man'] right now, and I’m working with some conceptual artists in tandem with writing the script. I’m actually working with one of the artists from ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight.’ So it could be ‘Magneto,’ or it could be ‘The Invisible Man’ next.”

Old–school horror fans will undoubtedly be rooting for the latter. And it should make them giddy to know that Goyer has been tracing the non-material man all the way back to his roots, in order to yank him into the modern age.

“Well, ‘The Invisible Man,’ the Universal film, is a great movie, a Claude Rains film,” Goyer said with admiration. “My take is kind of an extrapolation. It actually deals with a nephew of the first character. It’s got some of the characters from the H.G. Wells book, but it’s kind of a continuation.”

Goyer said that if you’ve seen the Rains film, you might actually get more out of the new version; but at the same time, there’ll be no prior knowledge required.

“It involves Scotland Yard getting their hands on the current Invisible Man and basically saying, ‘Wow, you’d be a really good secret agent to send into Imperial Russia right now,’” an enthusiastic Goyer said of the plot. “It starts off from there.”

As for the intended look of the film he’ll direct as well as write, Goyer made reference to a popular style of fantasy that has emerged over the last few decades: “It kind of crosses a lot of genres. It’s very steam punk.”

And if you’re thinking that the nephew of Jack Griffin will similarly be rendered as a floating hat and scarf in our age of CGI, think again.

“I don’t want to give too much away, but I took what being invisible could mean to the next logical extreme,” he explained. “We do a lot of crazy things in it that are sort of far beyond what anyone’s done with it yet.”

"Magneto" to Begin Filming Next Year.

IGN caught up with David Goyer to find out what's going on with the other "X-Men" spin-off, "Magneto," which Goyer has been announced to direct.

"'Magneto' seems to be a movie that Fox still wants to make," he revealed. "They called me about it a couple of weeks ago. I'm still working on 'Unborn' through November. We said that when I finish 'Unborn,' we'll talk and maybe get that going next year."

Goyer previously revealed that the story will concentrate on the origins of Magneto and Professor X, starring with the young Magneto crushing the Auschwitz gates as seen in the Brian Singer-directed "X-Men." To find out more about his plans, click here.

Who Might Make a Magneto Appearance?

Latino Review has posted an interesting bit on a photo they came across while visiting the Hellboy II: The Golden Army creature effects shop. They were told that this particular character (a younger version of what we've seen before) will be part of Magneto, 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" spin-off (much like X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

The film, to be directed by David S. Goyer, is expected to center on a young Magneto discovering if his powers are real or not and the journey of his survival as a young man and how the one-time allies became mortal enemies.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Hugh Jackman has completed filming on director Baz Luhrmann's Australia, co-starring Nicole Kidman, and will begin shooting X-Men Origins: Wolverine in just three weeks! Leading up to the events of X-Men, "Wolverine" tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe.
