The ending of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" left the door open for Sabretooth to return in the upcoming sequel, but since the story will take place in Japan, that may complicate a cameo from the character.

MTV News went straight to Liev Schreiber to find out if there is a plan for him to reprise his role. "There's been some smatterings of conversation about it, but nothing concrete yet," he said. "Hugh [Jackman] mentioned that he had some conversations about it, but no one's told me about it yet."

Schreiber added that if Jackman wants him to do the second movie, he will be more than happy to. "I had a ball doing it, so I'd do it again," he said.

One reason why Schreiber wants to continue exploring Sabretooth is because he wants to see how his take on the character eventually becomes the more primitive, animalistic version from the 2000 "X-Men" film, played by Tyler Mane.

"I'd love to find out what happened to Victor," he said. "I'd like to find out how my Victor became Tyler Mane's Victor."

Schreiber: 'Kids Keep Me Young'

The Defiance star and actress partner Naomi Watts have two sons, Sasha, who has just turned two, and seven month old Samuel.

And despite approaching his 42nd birthday later this year, Schreiber is feeling younger than ever - thanks to his young boys.

Actor Liev Schreiber is disappointed with the action figurine of his X-men Origins: Wolverine character - because the toy looks like "an angry squirrel".

Schreiber plays Victor Creed, who eventually adopts the mutant alter-ego of Sabretooth, opposite Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in the box office smash.

But the 41-year-old is not completely happy with the plastic figurine of Sabretooth, likening the doll to the bushy-tailed tree creature.

He says, "I have one complaint about it, not that I'm not excited to finally have an action figure after all these years, but I want to know what compelled the designers of this action figure to - I'm assuming they read the plotline for the movie and saw that I play this prehistoric game cat - but what possessed them to make me look like an angry squirrel? You can almost see the nuts (in the mouth)!"

However, Schreiber's eldest son with actress Naomi Watts doesn't share his father's view - the Sabretooth doll is one of 21-month-old Alexander's favourite play things: "He has a bag of toys, that he calls the turtle bag, that he puts his favourite toys in and it took a tense 15 minutes (before he put it in the bag)."

It’s true the Aussie actor fills out a vest with the very best of ‘em (move aside John McClane!) and now his personal trainer, Michael Ryan is spilling the star’s workout and diet secrets. Ryan has been working with the 40-year-old for 20 years, helping him get into shape for the original X-Men movies and vamp actioner Van Helsing, but has confirmed what we can all can see – that “Hugh now looks the most ripped he’s been for any movie.” And how did he achieve it all? Under supervision, Hugh starts working up a sweat with a morning workout as Ryan explains: “Research suggests that people who train in the afternoons consistently do workouts of far less intensity than those who do train in the morning. When Hugh has a 6am filming start, that means we’ll be in the gym by 4am.”

The workouts last from 60 to 90 minutes and feature weights and cardio. They are then revised day to day, alternating which muscle groups to focus on and with small changes to keep things interesting. “The same workout can be done ten different ways by making these small changes,” reveals Ryan. And how often did Hugh put himself through this? Only six times a week for 12 weeks and with a diet that saw him chow down on six, sometimes seven meals a day.

Liev Schreiber talks X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I remember when Liev Schreiber was first announced as Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (released in the UK today), there was a slightly unenthusiastic stirring amongst fanboys to put it mildly.

I, on the other hand breathed a huge sigh of relief. The thought that such a talented actor as Schreiber had been chosen to flesh out a character that was only alluded to in the first "X-Men" was far more important to me than height, weight - or blonde hair!

In an interview with CanMag, Schreiber addressed his own concerns about the part, as well as his past experiences working with Hugh Jackman:

"Something like 12 years ago, Hugh and I did a film together and, believe it or not, I think I actually was bigger than Hugh, in those days," Schreiber said. "Things have changed, over the years, and he’s grown substantially, as an actor and as a human being, in general."

Once the Jackman flattery had been dispensed with, Schreiber began to talk about his own self-expectations and the weight of the fans' own opinions regarding a role as big as classic X-Men villain Sabretooth:

"So the first agenda was getting bigger. I made the awful mistake of going online to see what the fans thought and, of course, they said, ‘You need to get bigger.’ So I started working out with Hugh and doing the high-protein diet. Between the two of us, I think we wiped out a whole gene pool of chickens. I know people think that it’s a departure for me, but I don’t really. I feel right at home with that sibling rivalry thing with Hugh. It was a lot of fun."

Speaking of sibling rivalry, a similar relationship was developing off screen if Schreiber is to be believed:

"They said, ‘Would you guys like to do one more?’ and I remember looking across at Hugh, praying to myself that he would say, ‘I’m tired. I want to go home and go to bed.’ And, Hugh said, ‘No, I feel great!’ And I looked across at him and said, ‘Yeah, I feel great, too.’ They looked at Hugh and said, ‘One more?’ and Hugh said, ‘No, I could do two more!’ So I said, ‘Yeah, I could probably do three or four more!’ And that was my sole motivation for the rest of this entire film."

"Early on in the film, we were shooting in New Zealand and it was the first big fight sequence for Hugh and I, which was outside of the bar. Hugh and I had rehearsed, day and night, for that. I’ll admit and be candid that I wasn’t sure that, physically, I was up to this role. Now, I know I am, but initially, I was a little concerned. I’m sorry to say this in public, but Hugh and I, being the elder statesmen of this cast, were both rightfully concerned that we wouldn’t be able to pull off the fight that the stunt guys had shown us. Sure, we’d been lifting weights and we looked large, but what they were asking for was truly impossible and brutal. I just remember the third night, after shooting until six in the morning, every night, looking over at Hugh and the two of us were just so smashed up by the fight, and desperate to impress our small sons at home."

Based on the footage I've seen, I'd say Schreiber does a sterling job as Sabretooth. I've seen the bar fight in question, and the on-screen rivalry between the two characters is almost tangible, despite what some early reviews might say. What critics seem to be forgetting is that this is no longer an adaptation of a comic book series. Whether people like it or not, this film happens in the X-Men film universe, and as such it has to tie in as best as it can, working with the tools it's been left with.

Under the circumstances, director Gavin Hood and the cast have done a sterling job, and that's coming from a true X-Men fan. And thankfully, despite the gruelling routines that Schreiber and Hugh Jackman were put under during filming, Sabretooth never seems to have gone home with the actor at the end of the day:

"I’ve never been someone who takes characters home with me, at night. The claws and the teeth came off. Unfortunately, the sideburns didn’t. But, I’ve never really had a problem with that. Also, particularly in my case, I was playing anger, which is a relatively easy emotion to access. I know you’re all thinking, ‘Oh, he’s an angry guy!’ No. It’s easy for everyone. It’s a much easier emotion than love."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine hits theatres in the UK tonight, and in the US on 1st May 2009.

Naomi Watts & Liev Schreiber's Son Briefly Hospitalized

Liev Schreiber had a good reason for missing Tuesday's Los Angeles premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine: His 21-month-old son, Sasha, was sick, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

Schreiber, who plays Sabretooth in the film, immediately flew from L.A. to New York to be with his partner, Naomi Watts, and their two children.

Sasha, who was hospitalized overnight for respiratory issues, was released Wednesday morning.

"Sasha got home today and is feeling much better after being hospitalized on Tuesday night with respiratory problems," Schreiber's rep Ina Treciokas tells PEOPLE.

Schreiber Almost Killed In Surfing Accident

Actor Liev Schreiber cheated death when he was caught up by a riptide while learning to surf off the coast of Australia.

The movie star was holidaying with Aussie partner Naomi Watts when he decided to give surfing a try off the coast of Sydney suburb Tamarama - and it almost killed him.

The 42 year old tells Sydney's Daily Telegraph newspaper he thought he knew how to outswim the riptide - but he was wrong.

He says, "The stupid thing I did was instead of letting the rip take me and my surfboard out and then swimming back around the top, I said, 'I can swim out of this...' I was exhausted."

And the current dragged him to a cove, called McKenzies, where waves crash against a rock wall.

He adds, "It was like a washing machine. I've never experienced a break like it. It was so quick and strong with no room to get out at the end. The break just picked me up and dumped me in the rocks and wouldn't let me up.

"My leash got tangled around both legs so I couldn't get my legs out to swim. That's when I started sucking down water."

It was his training as a lifeguard in his teens that saved his life.

He explains, "I didn't move my legs and actually rested underwater and waited until my legs untangled and then floated back up. I got nailed a couple of times. But I didn't panic and I was able to swim to safety."

You know the claws. You know the rage. And you know the sideburns. But there is a lot about Marvel Comics' mutant superhero Wolverine that you might not know. So here are ten facts you should know before you see "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the upcoming prequel that sheds light on his mysterious past. And to see Hugh Jackman back in action, you can skip down to watch three exclusive TV spots from the movie.

1. Wolverine wasn't in the original line-up of Marvel Comics' "X-Men" that was created by Stan Lee in the 1960s. He first appeared as an adversary to The Incredible Hulk, and was brought into the X-Men when the series was restarted in 1975.
2. Co-creator Len Wein's original idea was that the character was actually a wolverine cub that was mutated into human form. He also intended for Wolverine's signature claws to extend from his gloves, not from his body. But these ideas were dropped when new writer Chris Claremont took over the series.
3. Wolverine was originally a supporting character, with the focus of the X-Men stories mostly on team leader Cyclops. But he quickly became a fan favorite, and he got his own solo series in the '80s. Last year, Wizard Magazine ranked him at #1 in their "Top 200 Comic Book Characters of All Time" list.
4. Logan's backstory was mostly kept hidden for the first 25 years of his existence. Finally in 2001, Marvel released the six-issue series "Origin" which told Logan's life story. Born in Canada in the 1800s, James Howlett discovered his mutant powers (and claws of bone that pop out of his hands) after a family tragedy. This story is the jumping off point for the new movie.
5. Russell Crowe was director Bryan Singer's first choice to play Wolverine in the first "X-Men" movie, but his asking price was too high. Scottish actor Dougray Scott was then cast, but he dropped out when filming went long on "Mission: Impossible 2." Hugh Jackman stepped into the role two weeks into filming, and at 6'2", he stands about a foot taller than how Wolverine is depicted in the comics.
6. Around 700 pairs of Wolverine claws were constructed for the original X-Men movie. They were made of metal for close-ups, plastic for longer shots, and rubber for stunts. Each pair were specially fitted for Jackman or the stuntman who wore them. The special effects crew also made a replica of Jackman's arm so that the claws could physically pop out without digital effects.
7. "X-Men: The Last Stand" was the final movie with the original lineup of characters, but more X-movies are in the works. "Wolverine" is intended to launch not only a series of solo movies for Jackman, but also the "Origins" franchise. Currently in the works is "Magneto," exploring the backstory of the villain. Also, "Gossip Girl" creator Josh Schwartz is writing "X-Men: First Class," about the teenage students of Professor X's school.
8. "Wolverine" introduces some new mutants that will be played by some fresh faces. One is long-time fan favorite, Gambit, a mutant who can energize objects into explosive weapons. He'll be played by Taylor Kitsch, star of TV's "Friday Night Lights." It's the biggest movie role yet from the Canadian hockey player-turned-actor, who previously appeared in "The Covenant" and "Snakes on a Plane."
9. The new movie will also introduce audiences to Daniel Henney, an American-born actor who has become an enormous star in South Korea. He broke out in the TV drama, "My Name Is Kim Sam-Soon," a show so popular over half the country tuned in for the series finale. In "Wolverine" he plays Agent Zero, a government operative who is part of the Weapon X program that gives Logan his metallic skeleton.
10. Some more familiar names popping up in the new movie include Liev Schreiber, who put on 40 pounds of muscle to play the menacing Sabretooth. Ryan Reynolds appears as Deadpool, a mutant mercenary who may get his own movie in the future. Dominic Monaghan plays Bolt, who manipulates energy, and will.i.am has his acting debut as the teleporting Wraith. New X-Men Origins: Wolverine Photos and Footage Debut

In a very odd decision, 20th Century Fox has decided to go against the norm and release new footage from the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine in three separate instances on TV. Beginning this Sunday, February 15th, viewers will see three special 60-second TV spots that will air over the course of three nights. Together, with one spot leading into the next, they will form a narrative revealing the origins of Wolverine. In essence, instead of showing us a new trailer, we get this 3-minute glimpse at X-Men Origins: Wolverine as seen on Fox's cable TV network. In anticipation, four new photos have been revealed as well.

The first spot will air Sunday, Feb. 15 during "Family Guy" (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT); the second on Monday, Feb. 16 during "House" (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT); and the third will air Tuesday, Feb. 17 during "American Idol" (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on Fox. As excited as I am for Wolverine, this is the cheapest and dirtiest trick in the book. All they care about is getting more viewers for their TV shows and making more money from commercials. Well, that's Fox for you - the slimiest bastards in Hollywood! We'll do our best to pull these off the air as soon as they debut for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy the new photos!









X-Men Origins: Wolverine is directed by South African filmmaker Gavin Hood, of the Oscar winner Tsotsi and Rendition previously. The script was written by veteran screenwriter David Benioff, of 25th Hour, Troy, and The Kite Runner previosuly. The character of Wolverine was first created by Len Wein and John Romita Sr. back in 1974. Fox will debut X-Men Origins: Wolverine in theaters everywhere on May 1st.

We have the Blob, played by Kevin Durand in a fat suit, which should be a sight to see. We also have Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth, who was originally going to wear a muscle suit to bulk him up and make him look more menacing, however he decided he would get muscles his own way.

Just over a year ago, Schreiber was “smoking a pack and a half and drinking my nuts off” on a Broadway stage eight times a week in a blistering, virtuoso performance in Eric Bogosian’s Talk Radio. Then he was cast as Sabretooth, the supervillain in this summer’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, opposite his friend Hugh Jackman. (”The very large and very muscular Hugh Jackman,” he says.)

“I started to read blogs in the comic world with things like ‘That’s the dumpiest, most out-of-shape Sabretooth I’ve ever seen in my life!’” he says. “They gave me a muscle suit at the beginning. I was so humiliated I thought, I’ve got to try to do this on my own.” Jackman helped him train, putting him on a diet so poultry-intensive that Schreiber jokes they were becoming “the Hitler and Mussolini of the chicken world. But I felt like I owed it to the genre to be big.”

It’s good to see Liev was dedicated to his role, unlike Kevin Durand. If you land the role of The Blob you eat and eat until you become horribly obese. Wearing a fat suit is just a cop out. Shame on you Kevin Durand! Shame on youuu!

Tough talk from Liev Schreiber

If you think Liev Schreiber is an unlikely action star, you’re not alone. The Internet is teeming with bloggers angry over the actor’s casting as Sabretooth in “Wolverine,” the upcoming “X-Men” prequel. But Schreiber insists he’s been training for he-man heroics all his life.

“I always loved to play cops and robbers and cowboys and Indians when I was a kid,” he says. “I hate to blow anyone’s cover here, but I don’t think that men really grow past 22 intellectually. We never stop wanting to jump around and play.”

In “Defiance,” the first of two Schreiber-fronted action films, he combines brains with brawn to portray Zus Bielski, a true-life hero who, with his brothers (Daniel Craig, Jamie Bell), led a resistance against the Nazis during World War II.

For Schreiber, who’s spent most of his career playing doctors, artists and intellectuals, it was a welcome change of pace to be clutching a submachine gun and going mano o mano with Craig.

Unlike some cinematic action heroes, Schreiber is a physically imposing man, who often finds himself towering over his co-stars. For his next film – 2009’s comic-book-fueled “Wolverine” – he plays mutant supervillain Sabretooth alongside Hugh Jackman.

“It was insanely fun,” Schreiber, 41, says. “I felt very self-conscious initially because I knew the fans didn’t like the idea of me playing Sabretooth. I think that I’m perceived as a kind of urbane New Yorker. Maybe I’ve played too many Jewish characters. One blogger said, ‘It’s like Woody Allen playing Sabretooth.’

Schreiber chuckles and adds, “But I’m thinking, ‘Well, no, actually it’s not. I’m 6 foot 3. I’m bigger than Hugh Jackman. I can do this.’ “

Liev Schreiber was first asked to play Stryker in Wolverine

Most of us have seen the recent trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine (if not click here) and we got out first glimpse at Gambit, Stryker, Emma Frost, and Sabretooth in action. Well things could have been a little different according to Liev Schreiber who plays Wolverine’s half brother and rival in the film.

“I read the comics before I got offered the part,” says the 41-year-old. “I mean, I knew the character really well. Initially I’d been asked to play Stryker and I said, ‘Is there any chance that I might be able to play this Victor Creed guy?’” he recalls.

While that would have been interesting, from the trailer it is clear Danny Huston was a better casting choice for William Stryker. Liev continues:

“Victor Creed is Sabertooth, and I just want everyone to know that my character has a name,” he says smiling. “He’s a person too.”

“…rather than just say that Sabertooth’s a violent brute, I wanted to find out what makes the brute tick,” he says. “Hopefully people will like it.”
