'Logan' Breaks Ground with Adapted Screenplay Oscar Nomination

James Mangold's film is the first superhero movie to to be recognized in the category. After decades of comic book stories, Wolverine has reached a height no other superhero has before. Logan has become the first superhero movie to land an adapted screenplay nomination at the Oscars, with Scott Frank, director James Mangold and Michael Green sharing the honor. (In 2004, The Incredibles scored an original screenplay nomination for Brad Bird.) The R-rated movie served as a swan song for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, the character he'd played through nine films over 17 years, as well as for Patrick Stewart's Prof. X. Zoo's wolverine renamed after Hugh Jackman's action hero

Riddle me this Boxwishers. You work at Edinburgh Zoo (I know you probably don’t, but go with it) where you care for the only wolverines in the UK and this week there’s a blockbuster movie released where the central character is called Wolverine – what do you do? Only go and re-christen your wolverine after this cinematic idol. Introducing Logan, the newly re-named alpha male mammal who takes his moniker from Hugh Jackman’s hairy hunk from X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

It’s certainly a novel movie tie-in, one that is further established by Activision Blizzard, the creators of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine video game sponsoring the wolverine enclosure for a year. But it’s all in a good cause as this cash injection will help fund the animals’ breeding programme throughout the rest of the year and into 2010.

“As a charity we rely on our fundraising to further our work and sponsorship is an excellent way for us to raise essential funds,” explains Cristina Pouso, the corporate development manager at the Zoo. “Not just for the day-to-day care of our animals, but for our conservation projects across the globe.”

And Aruna Sinha, the senior brand manager for Activision Blizzard is equally pleased that the video game developer and publisher can do their bit. “With wolverines an endangered species, we see Wolverine having a major role in helping people become more aware of these wonderful creatures and ensuring their survival for many years to come.”

All sounds good to us and hopefully we’ll soon get bats called Bruce Wayne and spiders named Peter Parker. We can dream…

What Wolverine Movie Has Hasbro Been Watching?

Hasbro released pics of its upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie figures this weekend, and some of the more astute of you might notice that, well...none of the above are X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie figures. In fact, that's regular comic Wolverine, Logan and Sabertooth toys, with nary a hint of Hugh Jackman or Liev Schreiber. The question is: do you care, or are you fine with more comic figures?

Apparently, the line will also include a Weapon X Logan -- so naked with a big-ass helmet, I guess -- and a Stealth Logan, which hopefully won't mean the regular Wolverine figure painted blue. But there are also three TBDs according to Entertainment Earth. I would assume the remaining figures would also be comic style, but who are we thinking? The Blob? Silver Fox? Gambit? ...Deadpool?

Marvel Unveils Wolverine Action Figure

Though we continue to wait on an official poster for X-Men Origins: Wolverine -- which is dragging ass behind the trailer -- Marvel has already got an action figure worth checking out.

I don't know if it's the plastic gunshow, the shapely crotch, or the perfectly tailored jeans, but there is something extremely accurate about this first action figure for Wolverine. X-Men Origins: Wolverine Wraps Principal Photography

The Hugh Jackman starring X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which serves as a prequel to the X-Men trilogy of films, has just wrapped their principal photography, which had been taking place in Australia and New Zealand. Our friends at IESB.net were told by Marvel Entertainment's Kevin Feige that shooting has finishes in Australia, and there are only a few weeks left of filming on the second unit shots.

According to early reports, X-Men Origins: Wolverine will share a tone with the gritty 1970s style action-films, which will make it an odd pairing with the X-Men movies.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine explores Wolverine's early days, before joining the X-Men. The film will cover Logan's early life, and his involvement with the mysterious Weapon X program. The film stars Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Dominic Monaghan, Danny Huston, Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch, will.i.am, Daniel Henney, Scott Adkins and Lynn Collins. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is due to arrive in theatres in 2009.

Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Logan, the mutant who eventually becomes Wolverine and a member of the X-Men as he seeks revenge against Victor Creed for the death of his girlfriend. Origins allows us to look back at the beginnings of Wolverine and the shadowy Mutant X program, and features the appearances of fan-favorites Gambit and Deadpool for the first time in the X-Men movie canon. Directed by Gavin Hood and distributed by 20th Century Fox.

"Wolverine" is scheduled for a May 1, 2009 release.

'Wolverine' to duke it out...in the World Series of Poker?

It appears Logan may be cutting 'em down at the card tables in the upcoming 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' movie, with poker superstars Phil Helmuth and Daniel Negreanu were slated for a cameo in the film.
A Toronto reader named Ian gives us this scoop:

I was listening to 102.1 The Edge (an alternative radio station in Toronto) and they had poker player Phil Helmuth on a special guest. They started talking a bit about homegrown poker great Daniel Negreanu and Phil revealed some interesting news. Apparently the two of them were offered a chance to appear in the 'Wolverine' movie in Sydney! Phil had other commitments, but Daniel accepted. Supposedly they were to be featured in a poker game with Logan which is then interrupted by an unknown antagonist.

The info was confirmed last week in Helmuth's blog. Writes the poker champ:

I was planning on flying to L. A. on Saturday for the WPT Celebrity Invitational, but I slept until 3:30. I was even still considering flying all the way to Sydney, Australia on Saturday night to do a cameo in the movie "Wolverine." Daniel Negreanu was leaving LAX Saturday night at around 10:00 pm, and I loved the idea of joining him. I was told that we were wanted for a key scene, even though we may only have received a few seconds of screen time, and not much money for the deal. So what? Of all of the poker players that were invited, Daniel and I both wanted to go!! I mean: how cool is that? I'm surprised that the other poker players didn't want to do it, but the travel was severe, the money not much, and the advance notice not more than a few days. I would have gone, but I committed to do an event for Ultimatebet.com in Toronto on the eighth called the Cross Canada Tour, and they needed me on set through the evening of the eighth. Oh well, I hope Daniel represents for the poker world!

EXCLUSIVE: Kevin Durand to play The Blob in Wolverine

And just like that, we’ve got another little scoop for you from inside the production of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Last week we told you that Wolverine would encounter The Blob at some point during the upcoming prequel, and now we know who will be jumping into the big rubber fat suit. His name is Kevin Durand.

Not familiar with the name? Just look at the picture to the right. Durand is “that guy” from movies like Wild Hogs, Mystery, Alaska and most recently 3:10 to Yuma. Our source inside the production tells us that Durand was “live-scanned” for The Blob a while ago, but has just officially signed on to the project in recent days. Word is that he will be heading up to his native Canada to shoot scenes for the film sometime next week. This is also important because the rest of the production is happening half way across the world in New Zealand and Australia. Does this mean that The Blob will not share too many scenes with Wolverine himself? Or does it mean that he will be shooting everything in front of a green screen and be digitally inserted into the film? Or better yet, is the production moving to Canada at some point? Time will tell, I’m sure.

In other Wolverine news, Lord of the Rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan has also joined the production as Barnell, a former military ally of Logan with the power to harness energy and electricity.

WOLVERINE: SNIKT, BUB, SNIKT!
Filming of the 4th X-Men movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, is well underway down in New Zealand, pretending to be Japan and Canada (which is funny, considering how often Canada pretends to be other places; this time Canada doesn't even get to play itself), and the first official image was released this week. Logan's secret past and adventures will be featured this time around, with various X-related characters expected to show up, though most of them are being kept under wraps for now, except Sabretooth, who we can expect to look a lot different than the Tyler Mane version in X-Men. The plot is being kept under relative wraps, but judging from this image, Wolverine's time in Japan (a very central part of the character's history in the comics) will be covered, which is good news. I love it when Wolverine fights ninjas. Expect your next dose of mutant mayhem in early May, 2009 roughly around the same time as the CGI adaptation of G-Force (AKA Gatchaman) and J.J. Abrams' revisualized Star Trek (which got bumped back several months this week).


BRIAN COX COULD READ A POP TART BOX AND IT WOULD CREEP ME OUT
Brian Cox is reuniting with the director of his creepy pedofile drama, L.I.E. for an adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart, shortened down to just Tell-Tale. Josh Lucas costars in this version of the tale (which sounds a bit like The Eye), which follows a recent heart transplant recipient who must find the killer of the heart's original owner, or he will die. In other words, it's not really anything like Poe's story. Oh well. Brian Cox and Josh Lucas also have the distinction of belonging to the small club of actors who have played military officers in movies based on Marvel super heroes.

Huston is Stryker in Wolverine

JoBlo has learned that 30 Days of Night star Danny Huston will play William Stryker in 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He joins Hugh Jackman (Logan/Wolverine) and Liev Schreiber (Victor Creed/Sabretooth) in the "X-Men" spin-off directed by Gavin Hood and coming to theaters on May 1, 2009.

In X2: X-Men United, Brian Cox played an older version of the William Stryker character.

This film leads up to the events of X-Men and tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Pic Online?

Cinematical was sent in a pic of what appears to be the first image of Hugh Jackman in full Wolverine gear...

The photo shows Jackman dressed in a familiar black leather outfit complete with his loganesque side-burns. In the full pic, he's standing next to two fans.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is currently shooting in New Zealand tells the story of Logan's Weapon X beginnings and how he became the adamantium laced Wolverine. They're keeping casting for this one under lock and key at the moment, but we do know that Liev Schreiber is involved, most likely playing Victor Creed, aka Sabertooth, and that Aussie actor Christian Clark joined the cast in an unspecified role not long ago. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is due out in theaters on May 1, 2009.

Possible Wolverine Scene Details?

According to an unconfirmed source, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE has been busy filming in Dunedin, New Zealand for the last two days on a set called ‘Cassidys Bar’. The set is the grounds for a major fight scene between Victor Creed (Sabertooth) and Logan (Wolverine). The bar is in the shape of a barn with large doors at the front.

In the scene, Logan is thrown the entire legnth of the bar (about 60 feet) through the large front barn style doors. The bar itself seats about 50 people and has a large bar at the far end running alongside the entire wall, with trucks and a snowmobile parked.
