Much liked the ruled the comic shops of the '80s, the X-Men dominated the toy stores of the '90s. As kids grew disinterested in '80s mainstays like G.I. Joe and Transformers, the X-Men -- thanks to a very long-running and shockingly comics-accurate cartoon -- took over the space with countless Wolverines, Cyclopses, and Jean Greys (mostly Wolverines, though). Because of the show's longetivity and how much it borrowed from its source material, not only countless X-characters were made into toys, but Toy Biz scrambled to figure out new ways to repackage the main X-Men for more sales. Some of these worked. Some of them didn't. Here are 9 utterly unessential X-Men figures that don't need to be in anybody's collection.

Hot Toys presents Wolverine
Hot Toys presents the fan-favorite mutant Wolverine as their newest Movie Masterpiec action figure. This 1:6th scale collectible is based on Wolverine's look from the movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
This figure features:
* Newly developed Hot Toys hirsute muscular figure body with over 30 points of articulation.
* Stands approximately 30 cm tall
* Movie accurate costume of brown jacket, undershirt, shirt, jeans and boots.
* Life-like Wolverine Origins adamantium claws.
* Accessories: dog tags and a leather-like belt with detailed buckle.
* Two pairs of interchangeable hands
* Life-like head sculpt with authentic likeness of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
* Figure base with Wolverine nameplate and the movie logo.
** Special feature: new material used on the figure head, better head skin texture is presented with this new material.

The League of Extraordinary X-Gentlemen and Avenging Yeomen

I love custom toys. I can't make 'em myself, but I love seeing them, and some of my favorite have been the steampunk interpretations of Star Wars and so forth. I guess these Marvel superheroes customs -- pointed out to me by my sometimes friend, sometimes foe Great White Snark -- are more just Victorian than steampunk, but I still think they're hella awesome.

What Wolverine Movie Has Hasbro Been Watching?

Hasbro released pics of its upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie figures this weekend, and some of the more astute of you might notice that, well...none of the above are X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie figures. In fact, that's regular comic Wolverine, Logan and Sabertooth toys, with nary a hint of Hugh Jackman or Liev Schreiber. The question is: do you care, or are you fine with more comic figures?
Apparently, the line will also include a Weapon X Logan -- so naked with a big-ass helmet, I guess -- and a Stealth Logan, which hopefully won't mean the regular Wolverine figure painted blue. But there are also three TBDs according to Entertainment Earth. I would assume the remaining figures would also be comic style, but who are we thinking? The Blob? Silver Fox? Gambit? ...Deadpool?

Wolverine & the X-Men Toys Announced by Ebay

No one should be surprised that Hasbro is making toys for the Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon; it's a cartoon, it's X-Men, of course merchandising is half the point. However, I am mildly surprised that these toys are getting into the hands of Hong Kong eBay sellers before the toys have actually been announced. Usually the announcement comes first, then Hong Kong/eBay, then U.S. stores. Weird.
So if you check here, you can see auctions for Beast, Colossus and Avalanche. I'll make an educated guess and say that there's at least a Wolverine and a Cyclops in the first wave, but there's no way there's a White Queen (she'll be in a barely released third wave, if history has taught s anything). Since these are in package, they have to be close to shipping to the U.S., so expect to see them not long after the cartoon debuts on NickToons on January 23rd. Much thanks to Great White Snark for the tip, and thanks to eBay seller Dreamcab for announcing these things, as Hasbro obviously wasn't going to.
