Logan Vs. Omega Red In 'Wolverine' Sequel? That's The Match-Up Fans Want To See Most!

With all of last week's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" sequel news, we asked readers who they'd most like to see in the follow-up to this year's solo debut for Hugh Jackman and his Marvel Comics character.

After all the ballots were counted, the top two characters were separated by less than a dozen votes, and both of them seem more than up to the task of taking on Wolverine when he heads to Japan—or anywhere else, for that matter. Here's how the poll broke down, and why the votes went the way they did, according to readers:

Tentacled Russian villain Omega Red won the poll with 33 percent of the total votes, but recurring Wolverine foe Silver Samurai was close behind with 32 percent of the final tally. With Wolverine originally making his debut in a brawl with the Hulk, Marvel's Green Goliath also managed a respectable number of votes, and smashed his way to 18 percent of the total.

Neither Sabretooth, Cyber nor the combined efforts of the deadly ninja cult The Hand managed to generate more than 5 percent of the total votes, and X-Men foe Magneto barely factored into the poll at all. Take that, Master of Magnetism!

This week's responses in the "Other" category also proved fertile ground for some interesting responses, with a few votes for his son in the comics, Daken, as well as X-Men villains Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse.

As always, readers offered a wealth of input about why they voted the way they did. Here are some of the interesting responses I received via the comment section and Twitter:

- Anoobis: Although I like Omega red more then Silver Samurai, I chose Silver Samurai cause Omega Red is russian, it just woulnd't make sense for him to be in Japan without altering his origins completly.

- Toast-Jammer: How about Wendigo? I think the Hand would be decent in the next movie, and I could see an argument being made that Sabertooth should always show up in a Wolverine movie, but I don't know who the big bad should be next time around. Hulk would be fun, but for my money... WEN-DI-GO! .... I doubt that they'll do Omega Red, since they've got Whiplash in the new Iron Man movie. Russian dude with whips? It's been done.

- john@themovies: I voted for Omega Red, who's a true patriot. With his adamanium tentacles up against Wolverine. WAUW! But I also find that the Silver Samurai would play a big role in the movie. Because Wolverine learns the meaning of honor in Japan. It's a whole different world for him. In that world, the Silver Samurai thinks he's a man of honor. In the wrongs he does, he thinks the honor justifice the goals, or something like that. And last but not least, I would like to see Sun Fire, the Japanese hero. I heard that Jackie Chan would like to get a role in a Marvel movie, LOL Sun Fire would do great. Think about it. When Wolverine 2 comes out, Captain America will already been on the screen. Sun Fire is like the national Japanees hero, sort of. Lady Deathstryke? Didn't she died in X-2? They would have to resurrect her in a believable way... Me, I'm for Omega Red, Silver Samurai and Sun Fire. Well, we'll see...

Review: 'Hulk Vs.'

Marvel has had varying degrees of success with the direct-to-video efforts but the program continues and there’s little surprise that the most recent offering featured Wolverine, given the release this week of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. What is odd is that Lionsgate chose to release the video Hulk Vs. in January, too late for the holidays and too early to capitalize on the Fox feature.

The two-disc set features separate Hulk features and shine very different lights on the character. In the first, Wolverine is assigned to hunt down a monster crossing the border from America, codenamed the Hulk. Along the way, the two battle with much carnage but then the plot is complicated by the arrival of several foes from throughout Weapon X’s career – Lady Deathstrike, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Deadpool. In the 37 minute story, there are numerous flashbacks to the Weapon X program and how Logan was turned into a living weapon.

Visually, it’s the best animated Wolverine we’ve seen yet. The character designs for his opponents are pretty terrific, but no surprise since they were handled by Jeff Matsuda. It’s also one of the best voice casts I’ve heard on a Marvel production. The story moves along nicely and the action is pretty relentless.

On the other hand, it’s not much of a Hulk story. Also, on their own, each of the villains has proven to be a match for Wolverine, but here, collectively, they’re dispatched with far too much ease, weakening their threat.

The second disc has a stronger story but weaker vocal casting and shows Loki using the Hulk as a pawn in his game against his half-brother Thor. The 45 minute story is spent entirely in Asgard and pits not only Thor against the Hulk but Thor and Loki against Hel, bargaining for the soul of Bruce Banner. What happens to Banner is rather poignant and gives this tale an emotional wallop missing from the other adventure. If the forthcoming Tales of Asgard animated feature is anything like this, we’ll all benefit.

Each disc comes with an assortment of trailers in addition to Making Of featurettes. The Wolverine disc has footage from the Lionsgate panel at last summer’s San Diego convention while the Thor disc has a loving tribute to Jack Kirby.

If you have an insatiable appetite for the ol’ canucklehead, you could do worse than investing your time with this DVD set.

I love custom toys. I can't make 'em myself, but I love seeing them, and some of my favorite have been the steampunk interpretations of Star Wars and so forth. I guess these Marvel superheroes customs -- pointed out to me by my sometimes friend, sometimes foe Great White Snark -- are more just Victorian than steampunk, but I still think they're hella awesome.

The History of Marvel Comic's Mutant Team: The X-Men

At the end of the 1960s, the X-Men series had been cancelled due to a complete commercial failure, completely dominated by more popular series including Spiderman, Captain America, The Hulk and The Fantastic Four. It was not until the early 1990s that the X-Men made an astonishing comeback, selling a record-breaking eight million copies in the first issue alone. Saturday morning cartoons were soon dominated by the ¬X-Men animated series, which acquired phenomenal television ratings. According to Peter Sanderson, author of Marvel Universe, "If Marvel published only the books of the now extensive X-Men "family" of titles, it would still be one of the largest comics company in North America." Stan Lee Teams With Disney For Cross-Media Superhero Series ‘Time Jumper’

Add another one to Stan Lee’s burgeoning media empire. The co-creator of such iconic characters as Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Hulk — is joining forces with Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment to produce what the studio calls the “most ambitious digital comic book series ever designed.”

Titled “Time Jumper,” the project is set to release on numerous platforms including online, print and mobile. According to Lee, “‘Time Jumper’ is more than a typical superhero. He’s a trend-setting breakthrough across all media; a hero for today’s digital age and tomorrow’s multiplatform entertainment.”

The series will follow Terry Dixon, a secret agent for a government org known as HUNT (Heroes United, Noble and True). His secret weapon? A cell phone invented by Dixon’s father called the Articulus that doubles as a time machine.

Disney says the book “combines the traditional print look and feel, including dialogue and thought bubbles, with today’s cutting edge multimedia elements, including edgy visuals, music, voices and a fast-paced storyboard, to take a classic genre into the next dimension.”

The project is one of multiple deals for Lee. In April, his company POW Entertainment announced a partnership with Virgin Comics where Lee will write, edit and oversee a “new universe of superhero characters.” POW is also producing the CGI superhero series “Legion of 5,” in addition to a slate of direct-to-video films under the “Stan Lee Presents” banner.

SDCC 2008: 'Wolverine vs The Hulk'

I meant to write this up last night, but you don't know how dead tired I was. I'm running on about one meal a day, which isn't hugely unusual for me, but when you're covering roughly 9 miles a day (that's the estimated distance of a few circles round the old convention center) and sprinted to a press roundtable, you need carbs. And I'm living on Starbucks.

Anyway, after the accidental sit-in of Race to Witch Mountain, I kicked back for Wolverine Vs. Hulk. It turned into one of the con moments you just kind of cherish -- and one I wish I could have shared last night, when it was fresher in my mind. I was sitting next to a really cool guy, who finally asked me "So, you're really just here to watch this because you want to?" I guess chicks are a rarity at this kind of screening. "Oh yes, I'm one of those people who buy all Wolverine's solo series!" "Well, cool!" (By the way, if you're reading this Hall H friend, hi!) I love when I get to share panels with cool people, when you can talk back and forth, laugh hysterically and groan aloud at the face pounding. It's what can make or break ComicCon for me.

When Marvel and Lionsgate launched their slate of Direct-To-DVD/Blu-Ray feature films we set out to bring comic fans an animated experience unlike anything seen before from Marvel animation. Young X-Men Get Gossip Girl Scribe?

In some odd Friday evening news, BlackBook magazine talked to Josh Schwartz, the writer and executive producer of shows like "The O.C.," "Gossip Girl" and "Chuck" (soon to be getting his own comic book!) and found out that he'd taken over the job of writing a screenplay for a Young X-Men movie (that title still hasn't been confirmed) which originally was to be written by Zack Penn. What's even odder than that juicy news is that BlackBook then took the story down, even though you can still see the original post at the link below. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, we were able to grab some of the original text which had Schwartz saying some rather unflattering remarks about his superhero peers and predecessors:

Something he can talk about, however, is news that he will pen the screenplay for the next installment of X-Men, a prequel of sorts. "I'm very well aware that I'll be bludgeoned by purists, but I love its mythology, and it comes with a pretty hefty paycheck." Of the project, he beams with excitement about the opportunity to involve lesser known X-Men characters who haven't yet been portrayed on film. It will center on teenage characters at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. "It's not like I'm adding new characters like Toaster Head, or anything like that." Despite his enthusiam, he's cautious, given the double-edged sword inherent in the seemingly inexhaustible renaissance of the genre. "The Hulk looks like it's going to be terrible. And why does he look like he's fighting against the monster from Cloverfield? I mean, with Transformers, it's not like fans were going to come back saying, 'You used the wrong car.' This, however, is a different story." Of his predecessors and their successes (or failures), he says, "Brett Ratner didn't have a lot of credibility going in to the third X-Men movie, but I think Bryan Singer [who directed the first two installments] got a free pass on Superman Returns because of his work on X-Men."
