Darren Aronofsky No Longer Directing The Wolverine

Darren Aronofsky and Twentieth Century Fox today issued the following statements about the director's involvement in the movie, The Wolverine.

Stated Aronofsky: "As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of 'The Wolverine' would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won't be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again."

Stated Twentieth Century Fox: "While we are of course disappointed that Darren can't do 'The Wolverine,' we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both 'The Wrestler' and 'Black Swan' with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making 'The Wolverine.' We will regroup and move forward aggressively.

Will Wolverine appear in X-Men: First Class? | Filmonic

Will Wolverine appear in X-Men: First Class? | Filmonic
Posted using ShareThis

One of the main reasons I am looking forward to X-Men: First Class is due to the prospect of having an X-Men film revolve around the X-Men and not Wolverine. Sure, he’s a cool character and Hugh Jackman is great in the role, but the bastard hogged all the screen time in the trilogy and other characters had to suffer in order for him to shine (Cyclops and Storm mainly). So with Wolverine on course to getting his own trilogy, it may finally be time for an actual X-Men film with X-Men: First Class, which will focus on young versions of Cyclops, Jean, Beast and Storm (among other’s yet to be confirmed) as they undertake their first year at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

However, with X-Men Origins: Wolverine making big money this past weekend, mainly due to Hugh Jackman and people’s interest in Wolverine, would Fox ever consider making an X-Men film without an appearance from the clawed one?

From MTV:

“Do you think Wolverine will be in the ‘X-Men: First Class’ movie?” I asked Jackman, expecting to hear a simple “no” or “no comment.”

“I don’t know,” he responded with a grin, leaving the door open. “You’re asking good questions. You’ve done your research.”

“I’ve got nothing to do with that movie, they don’t need me,” Jackman cautioned, then cryptically added, “…as a producer.”

Which brings up a good point: Although the “producer” in Jackman is already working hard to make a Wolverine spin-off sequel, it seems likely that the “actor” in him wants to leave the door open to guest appearances in the movies of other mutants.

“I haven’t even read the script,” he tried to explain of “First Class,” but once again added honestly: “But, we’ll see.”

Finally, I thought I’d give Hugh one more shot at a stronger confirmation or denial, so I asked if he’d be willing to do a small cameo in “First Class,” along the same lines of what Patrick Stewart did in his film. “Yeah,” Jackman grinned, escaping while he could. “You have done your research.”

A cameo would actually be quite cool, considering there would be little or no interaction between Wolverine and the characters he meet for the first time in X-Men 1. From X-Men Origins: Wolverine it is hinted that First Class would takes place after those events, so it could work. However, if Wolverine end’s up on-screen for more than 20 seconds I’ll showcase some berserk rage of my own.

Jackman in for "Personal Security," "Drive" and "Wolverine" sequel.

Hugh Jackmanand John Palermo will be using their Seed Productions banner for seversal projects for Jackman who can be seen in the current number one film "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

First up, news comes of Fox and Seed eyeing out a sequel to "Wolverine" which pulled in a big $85 million last weekend.

Apparently the sequel focuses on the samurai storyline originated in the comic series There's no writer attached as yet.

In "Personal Security" which Fox has just closed a deal on, Jackman will star as a tough New York cop who is forced to play bodyguard for a spoiled brat teenage heiress who is receiving kidnapping threats. Matt Lieberman wrote the spec script. Jackman and Palermo will produce alongside Michael Schreiber from Tapestry.

"Drive"would have him play a solitary man who apparently drives race cars during the day and getaway cars at night. The latest draft was written by Hossein Amini, based on the James Sallis novel.

Which Wolverine Spin-Offs Would You Want to See, If Any?

From: firstshowing.net
Written by: Alex Billington

Pirating be damned, X-Men Origins: Wolverine made $85.1 million at the box office this weekend. Of course, I'll argue that it could have made a lot more, but that's a story for another day. While perusing around the web looking for some news today, I came across this article on io9 that featured quotes from an interview IESB did last week with producer Lauren Shuler Donner. She talked a bit about some of the potential spin-offs and how far along they are in development. Everything hinges on the success of Wolverine, but with that kind of solid opening, I'd say it's likely we'll see something get a greenlight.

So if they move forward with another Marvel movie, what would you want to see? There are really four options for Fox after Wolverine. First off, the sequel, Wolverine 2, which Hugh Jackman has said might see Logan venturing to Japan in that storyline. Secondly, there's the obvious Deadpool spin-off, which has been buzzed about because the character is a fan favorite. Third, there's a possibility of continuing on with the young mutants in X-Men: First Class, which already has a script and is moving forward. And lastly, while this isn't a spin-off, there's still a chance that X-Men Origins: Magneto could still get made.

To get into some of these spin-off ideas a bit further, I have to say, that the scene in the first 15 minutes showing Wade Wilson aka Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) fighting off the henchman in the office building with his swords was awesome. If they could make a whole movie with that kind of action, I'd be all for it. I understand that this is why people are excited for a Deadpool movie. Even though they "screwed him up" at the end, I'm sure they'd make sure he gets back to that kind of badass sword fighting action. So anyway, I know I'm at least in for a Deadpool spin-off. But what about you? What do you want to see?

In what must be the most obvious piece of news this month, it has been announced that 20th Century Fox and Hugh Jackman’s production company Seed are developing a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

From Variety:

Fox and Seed are in development on a sequel to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which topped the domestic box office over the weekend.

The Seed partners have begun planning the sequel, which they are squarely focusing on the samurai storyline originated in the comic series, and whose Japanese locale was teased after the film’s final credits. A writer has yet to be hired. Seed will produce.

No word on whether director Gavin Hood will return, although we probably won’t see the sequel for another few years (2012 seem likely and would fit with the typical 3 year cycle) so we probably won’t get any major cast/crew announcements any time soon. In the meantime Jackman has a few other projects lined up. According to THR Jackman has joined Disney’s Ghostopolis:

The story centers on a man who works for the government’s Supernatural Immigration Task Force. His job is to send ghosts who have escaped into our world back to Ghostopolis. When a living boy accidentally is sent to the other side, the agent must team with a female ghost (and former flame) to bring him back.

Jackman is also keen on making Carousel, a musical, and Drive, which would see him play a solitary man who drives race cars by day and getaway cars by night in Los Angeles.

Swedish People Not Digging 'Wolverine'

From: actressarchives.com

Known for its high taxes, rustic scenery and history of Nazi collaboration, Sweden is indeed a mysterious country. Often confused with Switzerland, Sweden is by contrast a highly conservative country, evidenced most recently by its decision to slap Marvel's latest cinematic offering, "Wolverine," with their most severe rating.

Reported Thursday by Variety, members of the Swedish Board of Film Censors have bequeathed the Hugh Jackman film with a "15 classification" - meaning that no one under that age (the same as the country's sexual consent age) would be permitted to view it, with or without an adult.

"Of course we respect the decision," Fox Sweden CEO Hansi Mandoki told Variety yesterday, following the Stockholm Court of Appeals upholding the board ruling, "but it is sad that so many fans won't be able to see the film." He added, "I'm certain the decision will mean more illegal downloading of the film."

Execs at Fox (the film's distributor) are quick to point out that the three "X-Men" films preceding "Wolverine" all received "11 classification," meaning children as young as 7 could see them with an adult. Likewise, other violent films released this year - including "State of Play," "Quantum of Solace" and "Valkyrie" - all received an "11."

Maybe they just don't like the idea of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool?

10 Mutants Who Need an X-Men Origins Movie

From: blog.spout.com
Written by: Christopher Campbell

As long as X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a success this weekend (and despite all its “bad luck,” it should do very well), Fox will follow it with another X-Men spin-off, this one detailing the back story of Magneto. Outside of that project, which has been in the works just as long as the Wolverine film, there’s interest in solo movies for Gambit, Deadpool and Emma Frost (White Queen), as well as a spin-off about the original X-Men team as students.

Recently, in another list, we called for an Origins film focused on the shape-shifting villain Mystique, for which we even suggested Brian DePalma to direct. That spin-off is still our first choice, but since there are so many great mutant characters in the Marvel Universe, we’d like to pitch ten more X-Men origin movies to Hollywood (not just to Fox). To go along with the studio’s idea of hiring an unqualified filmmaker (Gavin Hood) for the job, we also recommend a barely appropriate director for each film.

Review: 'Hulk Vs.'

From: comicmix.com
Written by: Robert Greenberger

Marvel has had varying degrees of success with the direct-to-video efforts but the program continues and there’s little surprise that the most recent offering featured Wolverine, given the release this week of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. What is odd is that Lionsgate chose to release the video Hulk Vs. in January, too late for the holidays and too early to capitalize on the Fox feature.

The two-disc set features separate Hulk features and shine very different lights on the character. In the first, Wolverine is assigned to hunt down a monster crossing the border from America, codenamed the Hulk. Along the way, the two battle with much carnage but then the plot is complicated by the arrival of several foes from throughout Weapon X’s career – Lady Deathstrike, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Deadpool. In the 37 minute story, there are numerous flashbacks to the Weapon X program and how Logan was turned into a living weapon.

Visually, it’s the best animated Wolverine we’ve seen yet. The character designs for his opponents are pretty terrific, but no surprise since they were handled by Jeff Matsuda. It’s also one of the best voice casts I’ve heard on a Marvel production. The story moves along nicely and the action is pretty relentless.

On the other hand, it’s not much of a Hulk story. Also, on their own, each of the villains has proven to be a match for Wolverine, but here, collectively, they’re dispatched with far too much ease, weakening their threat.

The second disc has a stronger story but weaker vocal casting and shows Loki using the Hulk as a pawn in his game against his half-brother Thor. The 45 minute story is spent entirely in Asgard and pits not only Thor against the Hulk but Thor and Loki against Hel, bargaining for the soul of Bruce Banner. What happens to Banner is rather poignant and gives this tale an emotional wallop missing from the other adventure. If the forthcoming Tales of Asgard animated feature is anything like this, we’ll all benefit.

Each disc comes with an assortment of trailers in addition to Making Of featurettes. The Wolverine disc has footage from the Lionsgate panel at last summer’s San Diego convention while the Thor disc has a loving tribute to Jack Kirby.

If you have an insatiable appetite for the ol’ canucklehead, you could do worse than investing your time with this DVD set.

Blu-Ray Review: HD ‘X-Men Trilogy’ Primes Fans For First Big Summer Movie

From: Hollywoodchicago.com
Written by: Brian Tallerico

With ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ opening this Friday, fans can catch up on where Hugh Jackman’s legendary character earned a following big enough to warrant a summer tentpole release date in the Blu-Ray release of the “X-Men Trilogy” including the two films by Bryan Singer (“X-Men” and “X2: X-Men United”) and the three-quel by Brett Ratner (“X-Men: The Last Stand”). With nine discs, HD video/audio transfers, and dozens of special features, this is the Blu-Ray release of the season for the comic movie nut in your circle of friends and family.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

Very few franchises have been robust enough to support four films in the new millennium. With “X-Men,” “X2: X-Men United,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” and this week’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” this has been easily one of the most successful franchises of the ’00s (only Harry Potter, “Saw,” and “Fast & Furious” have had as many theatrical releases.) The three films in this set have made over $1.1 billion worldwide.

Knowing the rabid fan base of the franchise, Twentieth Century Fox has released a very complete set. Want special features? There are hours of them. Digital copies? There’s one for each film. And each film is presented in HD for the first time (the first and third film are presented in 2.40:1 with the middle film in 2.35:1). All three films are accompanied by 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio English tracks and 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks in Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

Sadly, Fox continues to underwhelm in the technical departments. “X-Men” looks older than it should with the picture often coming across much flatter than an average Blu-Ray. The picture simply doesn’t pop like it should, something I’ve noted far-too-often with recent Fox releases (although, to be fair, not all of them). Ultimately, “X-Men Trilogy” should look amazing and it looks (and sounds) merely average.

What is amazing is the collection of special features for all three films. They’re as informative and exhaustive as a fan could possibly ask for. There’s clearly no more material left on the cutting room floor and until the cast and crew gets together in decades for an anniversary edition, there are no more interviews or behind-the-scenes details to provide.

The first disc of special features on “X-Men” - Commentary by Bryan Singer and Brian Peck, Behind-the-Scenes Footage, Deleted/Extended Scenes with Optional Commentary by Bryan Singer and Brian Peck, Fox Special: “The Mutant Watch,” Bryan Singer Interview, Animatics, Art Gallery, Three TV Spots, Music Promo, BD-Live: Wolverine Exclusive, and HD Marvel
Universe Trailers.

The second disc of special features on “X-Men” - Disc Intro by Bryan Singer, The Uncanny Suspects, X-Factor: The Look of the X-Men, Image Gallery, Production Documentary Scrapbook, The Special Effects of the X-Men, Reflection of the X-Men, Marketing the X-Men, TV Spots, and Internet Interstitials.

The first disc of special features on “X2: X-Men United” - Commentary by Bryan Singer and Tom Sigel, Commentary by Lauren Shuler Donner, Ralph Winter, Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris and David Hayter, Generation X: Comic Book History, BD-Live: Wolverine Exclusive, and HD Marvel Universe Trailers.

The second disc of special features on “X2: X-Men United” - History of the X-Men, Pre-Production, Production, Post-Production, Deleted Scenes, Galleries, Locations and Sets, On-Camera Graphics, The Unseen X2, and Three HD Trailers.

The first disc of special features on “X-Men: The Last Stand” - Director and Writer Commentary by Brett Ratner, Zack Penn and Simon Kinberg, Producer Commentary by Avi Arad, Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter, HD Deleted Scenes (Optional Director and Writer Commentary by Brett Ratner, Zack Penn and Simon Kinberg), HD Easter Eggs, BD-Live: Wolverine Exclusive, and HD Marvel Universe Trailers.

The second disc of special features fon “X-Men: The Last Stand” - Brett Ratner’s Production Diary, X-Men: Evolution of a Trilogy, X-Men Up Close - Interactive gallery with stills and video, Generation X: Comic Book History, Fox Movie Channel
Presents: Life After Film School, Fox Movie Channel Presents: Casting Session, X3: The Excitement Continues in HD, Anatomy of a Scene: Golden Gate Bridge in HD, HD Vignettes, HD Blogs, Previz Animatics, Galleries, Easter Egg, and Three HD Trailers.

‘X-Men Trilogy’ is released by Twentieth Century Fox and stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Anna Paquin, Halle Berry, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Famke Janssen, Rebecca Romijn, Bruce Davison, Brian Cox, Kelsey Grammer, and Vinnie Jones. “X-Men” was written by David Hayter and directed by Bryan Singer. “X2: X-Men United” was written by Zak Penn and Hayter & Singer and directed by Singer. “X-Men: The Last Stand” was written by Simon Kinberg & Penn and directed by Brett Ratner. “X-Men Trilogy” was released on April 21st, 2009. All three films are rated PG-13.

Swine Flu Causes Wolverine Premiere Cancellation In Mexico City

From: imdb.com

The Mexican premiere of Hugh Jackman's new movie X-men Origins: Wolverine has been cancelled because of a swine flu epidemic in the capital Mexico City.

Jackman was due to roll into the North American metropolis on Wednesday to unveil the latest installment of the comic book franchise.

But bosses at studio Twentieth Century Fox have pulled the plug after new figures revealed over 100 people have been killed in Mexico City from the disease, which is affecting much of the globe.

A spokesperson tells People.com, "We were not only concerned about Hugh's welfare – and we would never send anyone into harm's way – but we also have an enormous office filled with people we care about. There was no point in proceeding under the current conditions.

"There is a possibility it could be rescheduled. Hugh is obviously beloved (there) so we'll see what happens. We'll monitor the situation."

Wolverine Combats Piracy By Becoming Clue

Wolverine Combats Piracy By Becoming Clue
Posted using ShareThis

Fox has come up with a new way to combat the pirating of Wolverine: They’re turning it into Clue. Director Gavin Hood recently announced at a screening attended by First Showing that they’ve hidden multiple endings to the movie on different prints. So where you see it, may drastically alter exactly how the movie ends.

Secret endings after the credits is nothing new, that’s become a staple in Marvel’s superhero films for instance. Multiple endings though, is significantly more drastic. There’s a reason it hasn’t been tried in a long time. It’s not like it worked all that well for Clue which, while regarded as a cult classic now, at the time was kind of a flop. At least with Clue it was warranted. It’s a mystery movie after all, based on a board game which had multiple endings. The multiple endings bit was part of the whole experience, this is just a blatant gimmick.

Still, for fans who may have illegally pirated the movie on their computer, it’s one more reason to shell out money at a movie theater, more than once if Fox has their druthers. I still say Fox is overreacting. Most people who pirate movies don’t buy movie tickets anyway. With or without gimmicks I don’t see piracy having much of an impact on Wolverine’s box office. At least now Fox has a built in excuse if it fails. They can’t lose.

Fox Doing Ultra Last Minute Reshoots for X-Men Origins: Wolverine to Extend Running Time?

From: FilmJunk.com
Posted by Sean

Today I received a very strange and intriguing report from an anonymous source concerning the upcoming release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While I wouldn’t normally post a completely random rumour, in this case the tipster is someone who has e-mailed me before and has proven to be pretty reliable. Plus, considering all the wacky stuff that has happened thus far with Wolverine, I am now willing to believe just about anything.

Word on the street is that a brand new scene was shot for Wolverine on the Fox studio lot yesterday, involving both Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. I know it sounds crazy that they would shoot additional footage just one week before the movie’s release. It is crazy. But from what I’ve heard, a lot of the effects work for the movie is going right down to the wire anyway. Now, allow me speculate further: could it be that they are scrambling to alter the movie or extend the running time at the very last minute?

You may remember that when the workprint version of Wolverine leaked a couple of weeks ago, Fox head honcho Tom Rothman insisted that it was “missing key scenes” and that it was actually 10 minutes shorter than the finished version that would appear in theatres. However, now that the running time has been released online and some press screenings are starting to be held, a lot of people are reporting that the final version of Wolverine is exactly the same as the workprint. Obviously Fox is still pretty worried about the leak and wants to ensure that people have a reason to go see it in theatres. Do you think they have a reason to panic? Will people really avoid going to the theatre if they find out the workprint isn’t missing scenes after all?

Fox Predicting Big Numbers for "Wolverine"

From: WorstPreviews.com

It was recently announced that a leaked copy of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" has already been downloaded over a million times, which could mean a loss of millions of dollars at the box office for 20th Century Fox. Not quite.

It turns out that "Wolverine" is tracking incredibly well among young men and guys ages 31 and older, the two key demographics needed to boost the opening weekend numbers. That makes the movie the No. 1 choice among males in those groups.

We will have to wait until May 1st to see how the film does, but at this point, Fox is very optimistic. One executive said that it is too early to predict the opening numbers, but they're sure to be huge. "Wolverine is in fabulous shape," he added.

Hidden Surprises Promised for 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'

From: AceShowbiz.com

Despite the fact that the unfinished copy of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" final cut has made its rounds earlier, director Gavin Hood insisted that the pirated version hasn't contained everything. In a recent interview with Wizard magazine, the 45-year-old filmmaker revealed that there are still plenty of hidden surprises in store.

"Don't leave before the credits are over," the "Rendition" helmer explained of where to seek the surprises. "Now I say that and I better not be in trouble, because you do realize that I'm not done with the editing process and the studio still has to sign off on everything. But, yes, Hugh [Jackman] and I have a couple Easter eggs somewhere in there."

Back on April 1, reports were surfacing that a workprint version of "Wolverine" has been leaked and available for download on several bittorrent sites since Tuesday, March 31. Soon after, 20th Century Fox came up with a statement confirming the story as well as revealing their intention to pursue the source of the initial leak.

Taking the focus of the story on the metal-clawed mutant Wolverine, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" serves as a prequel to the "X-Men" trilogy. It chronicles the violent and romantic early life of the titular character, including his participation on the Weapon X program and his complex relationship with Victor Creed.

The action fantasy stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Danny Huston as William Stryker among others. Penned by David Benioff, it has been set to open in U.S. theaters on May 1.

MPAA is Coming After BitTorrent Users

From: WorstPreviews.com

Ever since "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" leaked online, 20th Century Fox, the FBI and the MPAA started a manhunt for the person responsible for stealing a copy of the yet to be released film.

Since "Wolverine" is shared through BitTorrent sites, the MPAA has been doing everything in its power to obtain private emails of TorrentSpy and The Pirate Bay, in order to dig up dirt on their owners and users.

One way the organization has been doing this is by hiring a hacker back in 2005, who has previously configured the TorrentSpy mail server to copy and forward all of the site's emails to his own Gmail account. The 34 pages of information he gathered was then sold to the MPAA for $15,000. TorrentSpy's owner later sued the MPAA, arguing that they had spied on him illegally, but he ended up losing the case.

The court ruled that the MPAA did not technically intercept them under the WireTap Act, but TorrentSpy is calling the decision a "dangerous attempt to circumvent privacy laws." If the ruling is upheld, it will basically legalize the unauthorized copying of other people's emails, which raises serious privacy concerns.

TorrentSpy has now filed a brief at the Court of Appeals and that the MPAA is expected to do the same in the near future. From then on it can take up to a year before the appeal is heard in court.

The point of this story is that if the law sides with the MPAA, everyone who has downloaded a copy of "Wolverine" or uses sharing sites could be at risk.

Which Movie Has the Better Pizza Promotion: Wolverine or Terminator Salvation?

From: FilmJunk.com
Posted by Sean.

Nothing says summer blockbuster quite like a good fast food promotion, and although Happy Meals have always been a pretty reliable marketing tool in the past, this year it seems like Hollywood has a hankerin’ for some ‘za instead. Earlier this week Pizza Hut unveiled a new website for Terminator Salvation where they will be showing off exclusive footage from the movie and running a contest with some sweet prizes including a trip to the Hollywood premiere. On top of that, they will also be giving away a free one-topping medium pizza to anyone named John Connor or Sarah Connor on Thursday, May 21. I’m serious.

Not to be outdone, Papa John’s just launched a promotion of their own this week for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. They’re not giving away any prizes, but instead, they’ve created a new pizza specifically for Logan and his pals: the XL X-treme Cheese Pizza, which comes loaded with nearly a full pound of cheese! Genius. Obviously the folks at Fox are still so busy doing damage control on the leaked workprint that they don’t seem to realize that being associated with “a full pound of cheese” might be a bad thing for Wolverine’s rep. Well, at least Papa John’s didn’t give away the movie’s top secret (read: not in the least bit shocking) PG-13 rating. What do you think, which pizza promotion offers the best value in the current economic climate? Is one less embarrassing than the other?

Photos: Hugh Jackman's Superhero Entrance at "Wolverine" Event

From: WorstPreviews.com

Actor Hugh Jackman is obviously disappointed about "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" leaking online a full month before the film's May 1st release. But he's not going to let that bring him down.

At a Sydney event for "Wolverine," Jackman made a superhero-worthy entrance by arriving at Cackatoo Island by helicopter and then zipping down to the ground on a "flying-fox" line. Once reaching the ground, he then unveiled 20 minutes of the completed footage from the movie.
