Well it looks like the list of contenders for the director of Fox’s The Wolverine has been narrowed down to eight. Following the sudden departure of Darren Aronofsky shortly before filming was to commence, Fox began searching for a replacement for the Hugh Jackman-starred follow-up to Gavin Hood’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now, Showblitz reports that the shortlist of contenders for the job is as follows: Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) Jose Padilha (upcoming Robocop remake), Antoine Fuqua (Shooter), Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go), Justin Lin (Fast Five), Gavin O’Connor (Warrior), James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma ) and commercials director Gary Shore.

With a script from Christopher McQuarrie, The Wolverine is largely set in Japan. Filming was poised to take place in that country, but it’s currently unknown if that’s still the plan given the natural disaster that recently ravaged the landmass. Hit the jump for more, including my thoughts on this list.

While none of these choices are as interesting as the prospect of seeing Aronofsky take on a superhero flick, I’d personally like to see either Romanek or Mangold’s take on the material. I found Romanek’s Never Let Me Go to be vastly underrated, and he was poised to take on the beastly character of The Wolfman before dropping out of that film over creative differences. Mangold’s 3:10 to Yuma showed his penchant for staging great-looking action set-pieces anchored by intense character drama, and Knight and Day was an incredibly fun and criminally overlooked adventure-flick.

Ultimately, though, this list seems to include directors that lean more toward “eye-candy” material than I was hoping after Aronofsky’s involvement. Lin definitely knows how to stage action but hasn’t really tackled any sort of serious material before, and Fuqua hasn’t made a good film since Training Day (and even that’s stretching it). It’s really just hard to care about this movie if they’re going for a straight popcorn flick, especially after the first film. Hopefully they’ll end up choosing someone who can do something different with the material. We’ll find out soon enough.

We are ramping up our X-Men: First Class coverage in the run-up to the film's release, and following our on-set interviews with James McAvoy, who plays Charles Xavier in the film, and Michael Fassbender, who plays Erik Lehnsherr, we catch up with the movie's producer, Bryan Singer. The director of the first two X-movies, Singer explains how the volcanic ash cloud helped him find his First Class helmer, discusses the importance of the Hellfire Club to his story, and talks up the possibility of future instalments.

IGN: Why did you decide to make X-Men: First Class?

Bryan Singer: It was initially a title I liked. I knew that there was exploration of doing a movie based on the First Class comic book, but I thought that to earn that or to get there, it would be interesting to go back to the origin of the X-Men. The formation of the relationship and the schism between Xavier and Magneto. And yet I still liked the title First Class because it reflected that concept every bit as much as the comic it's based on, so I just decided that I would pursue that story of young Xavier and young Magneto but retain the title First Class as a sort of beginning of the X-Men and they could go from there.

IGN: So is the plot inspired by any of the First Class story or is it something entirely original?

Singer: Oh, something I came up with just based on... When I made the first two X-Men films, I was conscious of figuring out how to play the relationship between Magneto and Xavier and I was always very conscious of what their past must have been. What their friendship was like. So that back-story was always playing in my head whenever I was discussing scenes with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. So this was a chance to finally go back and explore the history that was always bouncing around in my mind when I was making those other movies.

IGN: How is Charles and Erik's relationship at the start of this film?

Singer: I think that because of their mutual respect for each other's intelligence and powers, they are attempting to build a friendship, but they both come from completely different backgrounds. Xavier is very privileged and wealthy and as a result a bit naive and a bit idealistic. Whereas, Magneto is a product of the holocaust, he's hell-bent on vengeance, and his view of humanity and his hope for mutant-kind is seen through a much narrower prism. They both care for the same things, but in this movie you see the different ideologies fermenting.

IGN: We talked with both James [McAvoy] and Michael [Fassbender] about their characters being like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X in their approach to human and mutant rights. Were you thinking that when you came up with the story?

Singer: Absolutely. That was what attracted me to the X-Men many years ago... that relationship. Two people who want the same thing want to achieve it in very different ways. Nobody wants misery and failure for themselves and the people around them, but sometimes in pursuing prosperity, that can happen if it's not done in the right way.

IGN: Have you always been a fan of the X-Men?

Lucas Till: Well I never read any of the comics but I grew up on the animated series when I was a little kid - I guess it came out in 1992. So I've always been an X-Men fan.

IGN: Can you tell us a little about who you play in the movie?

Till: Alex Summers, and his superhero name I guess is Havok. I'm Cyclops' younger brother so I can shoot plasma beams out of my entire body instead of just optic beams.

IGN: So is Alex in control of his power?

Till: Just like Scott can't control his power without glasses or a visor on, historically Alex has never been able to control his power either, so it's always been outbursts with a lack of control. In the comics he has a suit that absorbs excess energy but it was more like a meter that would tell him how much power he has, whereas in this one I have something that channels it because I can't control it myself. So I have a chest-piece that focuses the ray so I don't blow my team-mates up.

Jennifer Lawrence rocketed to fame with her Oscar-nominated role in Winter's Bone, which she followed up with an equally excellent performance in the recently released The Beaver. This summer sees her try her hand at a big-budget blockbuster, playing Raven Darkholme in X-Men: First Class. The shape-shifting mutant who becomes better known as the villainous Mystique, Lawrence plays her as the good girl before she turns bad, and IGN caught up with her on-set late last year to discuss the evolution of her character.

IGN: Is starring in a superhero movie an antidote to the seriousness of Winter's Bone?

Jennifer Lawrence: I actually was thinking of it that way. Not this movie specifically, but kind of thinking about doing something a little lighter. I wouldn't call it an antidote, but I was definitely looking forward to it.

IGN: So tell us about your character.

Lawrence: Raven, or Mystique, is a shape-shifter and when she is in her natural, blue, scaly, red-haired form she also has super-human agility. She's young, and she's a normal teenager dealing with insecurities, but her insecurities aren't that normal. She's insecure about being a mutant, but she slowly grows to accept it and evolves into herself and starts to love it.

IGN: Are her powers fully formed in the movie?

Lawrence: She's been shape-shifting for a long time, but she's just recently learning about her superhuman agility. She discovers that in the movie.

IGN: What's it like to play a mutant?

Lawrence: It's completely different, but fun. You don't want to do the same thing every time and I do feel like I'm at the opposite end right now but I'm having a blast. It's a fun character to play, in a fun movie. We've got cool sets and I'm really loving all the special effects, because it's so different to Winter's Bone - I'm like a kid in a candy store.

Caleb Landry Jones made a cinematic splash as the creepy kid in last year's horror hit The Last Exorcism. He's tackling a very different kind of role in superhero prequel X-Men: First Class this summer, playing Sean Cassidy, who becomes better known as the sonic screaming Banshee. IGN exclusively interviewed Jones on the film's UK set late last year, and we talked about everything from cracking skulls to becoming an action figure.

IGN: How did you get the role of Banshee?

Caleb Landry Jones: All I knew was that it was the X-Men. I thought, 'What the hell are they doing auditioning a redhead? OK, I'll do my best.' I got the part and it's been brilliant. I've never been overseas - I've never been to Europe - and so that's amazing by itself. To be on a movie with such magnitude as this one is just absolutely amazing. I'm getting a chance I've never had before in my life. I'm getting to fly, which I've always wanted to do. I'm playing a superhero, which I've always wanted to do. Don't look like Spider-Man, don't look like Batman, so it's fantastic that there's one that I do look like, kind of.

IGN: Tell us about the character.

Jones: Well he's got a supersonic scream. He learns how to fly in this movie. He learns how to melt objects. In the beginning all he really knows is how to break things - car doors I'm guessing, things like that. And he's got selective hearing.

IGN: What does he do with his scream?

Jones: What's the technical way of saying it? I'm trying to think of Hank [McCoy]'s line when he explains it to me. He causes the sound waves... something about vibrations... I don't know the science behind it, but he can blow sh*t up and cause skulls to crack.

IGN: Do you get to do all that this in the movie?

Jones: Everything except the skull cracking. It's a PG-13!

IGN: How familiar were you with the X-Men when you got the role?

Jones: I'm much more familiar now that I've done some reading. I wasn't very familiar in the beginning - I wasn't allowed to watch it as a kid what with Wolverine saying 'Punk' and things like that. I couldn't watch the show. I was really into Batman, but not X-Men as such. Although now I've got a full booklet - it's like 500 or 800 pages of just Banshee comics.

If you can get over the continuity worries and the concern that it’s a prequel, and perhaps some of the acting on display, there’s very little wrong about the latest set of trailers for X-Men: First Class. I love the play with history, the JFK voiceover and the weaving of these characters into such a huge event in America’s past that brings with it so much more depth and resonance than the usual comic book movie. My mind has been racing tonight at the thought of what could be in store for us.

Duncan Jones On Wolverine Rumours

As anyone who's seen Source Code will testify, Duncan Jones has made the transition from indies to big studio fare look very easy indeed. Other directors who've made the journey - Alex Proyas, Richard Kelly et al - will admit that it isn't as straightforward as Jones' action/thriller makes it look, A-listers, pyrotechnics, CGI and all.

So what's next? When the Moon man stopped by for a webchat he was as cagey as you'd expect for a man on the cusp of great things, but still those Wolverine rumours kept surfacing. So would Jones's next project have adamantium claws?

"Who knows what'll be coming up next - I have a lot of meetings and catching-up to do when I get back to LA," says the director, who's since confirmed that one of them would be with 20th Century Fox to talk Logan. "[Wolverine is] more interesting to me than Batman," he told IGN at this weekend's Kapow! "A good Wolverine film could be an amazing thing." Yes, it's vague but it does sound like Jones is a strong contender for the berth recently vacated by Darren Aronofsky. Watch this space.

His Blade Runner-homaging sci-fi Mute, meanwhile, is inching its way to fruition. Its first incarnation will be as a graphic novel, with Jones plumping for the tried-and-tested route of winning studio backing to bring his story to the big screen. "I have some meetings set up to start discussing how the graphic novel will come together," he explained, in between sharing his passion of homegrown comic books and explaining what happened to his Judge Dredd pitch.

"My preference would be to do a 2000AD character, which is why I got very excited about Judge Dredd. But unfortunately I had such a strong idea of what I wanted to do with that that it wasn't going to mesh with the very strong script that they had. Maybe I'll get another shot one day, or maybe I'll get the chance to try one of the other characters from Britain's sci-fi bible."

Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool movie gets a director

Visual effects maestro Tim Miller is taking the reins

After an irksome amount of to-ing and fro-ing, Fox have finally found a director for Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool spin-off, with visual effects whizz Tim Miller landing the job.

Miller has worked on comic-book movies including X-Men, X2 and Daredevil, so he's no stranger to the superhero scene. He also worked on Scott Pilgrim's extremely nifty VFX, which is promising for offbeat anti-hero Deadpool.

The character, AKA Wade Wilson, AKA the Merc with a Mouth, had a few minutes of scene-stealing screen time in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, before being offed by Wolvie in the film's climactic moments.

This new outing will apparently stand independent from Wolverine, and the script, by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, will apparently see the mercenary return to his comic-book roots, which means we should be in for tons of anti-heroism and fourth-wall breaking.

The path from VFX guru to director isn't always a smooth one (we've all tried to forget Alien vs Predator: Requiem), but perhaps a fresh approach is what's needed to give Deadpool the edgy adaptation he deserves.

It's not yet entirely clear when the film will happen, although with a director now hired, Fox are obviously moving forward with the project.

Reynolds' rival superhero movie, DC's Green Lantern, is out this summer, and depending how it fares, he could be roped in on sequel duties for that one.

He's also shooting paranormal cop thriller R.I.P.D. this summer, so perhaps Fox would be looking to slot Deadpool in after he has completed work on that one.

When Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky backed out of The Wolverine a little over a week ago, it left the promising comic book drama in the lurch.

Part of the anticipation for the film, in which Hugh Jackman’s X-Men character ventures to Japan and encounters a legion of samurai warriors, was having the provocative tendencies of Aronofsky channeled into a commercial action-adventure movie. Jackman himself has been bulking up, gorging on protein and working out to build muscle, in anticipation of the project’s start. Then Aronofsky said he could no longer commit to the project because the Japan shoot would interfere too much with his personal life.

Jackman says he’s not quitting now.

The actor was in Las Vegas for CinemaCon, the annual convention for theater owners, to reveal the first scenes of his upcoming robot-boxing drama Real Steel. (More on that film in an upcoming Inside Movies post.) After the presentation, he told EW that The Wolverine remains very much alive — he’s staying on board, and the script by The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie is still in play.

“So now we’re out looking for a director,” Jackman shrugged. “We were pretty much ready to go. The script is fantastic — the best we’ve ever had, which is why it attracted Darren in the first place. His personal situation precludes him from doing it now, and I feel for him. But now we need to find a director.”

Jackman wouldn’t cite any preference, but said the team is aiming for another prestige filmmaker, not just someone to yell “action” and “cut.”

“We’re not going to settle. We’re going to find a director as good as Darren, if not better. Well, as good,” Jackman said. “Everyone is still pushing forward to getting it done.”

The actor did acknowledge a little impatience, especially since he’s growing weary of his protein-powered, muscle-building diet. “I can’t be eating too many more chicken breasts,” he groaned.

Darren Aronofsky No Longer Directing The Wolverine

Darren Aronofsky and Twentieth Century Fox today issued the following statements about the director's involvement in the movie, The Wolverine.

Stated Aronofsky: "As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of 'The Wolverine' would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won't be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again."

Stated Twentieth Century Fox: "While we are of course disappointed that Darren can't do 'The Wolverine,' we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both 'The Wrestler' and 'Black Swan' with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making 'The Wolverine.' We will regroup and move forward aggressively.

Fox Filmed Entertainment has signed Darren Aronofsky and his production company Protozoa Pictures to a new two-year, overall deal, it was announced today. Under the deal, Protozoa will develop and produce films for both Twentieth Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures.

Aronofsky’s debut picture under the pact will be "The Wolverine," starring Hugh Jackman. Written by Oscar-winner Christopher McQuarrie, the film is scheduled to begin production in April next year.

The deal solidifies Fox’s relationship with Aronofsky, whose recent films--this fall’s critically acclaimed psychological thriller, "Black Swan," was produced and distributed by Fox Searchlight, which also distributed Aronofsky’s 2008 award-winning film "The Wrester." "Black Swan" opened this year’s Venice Film Festival, and has since screened at such major festivals as Telluride, Toronto and London to great acclaim. The film arrives in theaters beginning December 3.

“Darren’s vision has brought audiences some of the most original and memorable stories and characters in recent motion picture history,” said Fox Searchlight heads, Steve Gilula and Nancy Utley. “We at Fox witnessed this first hand with his work on "The Wrestler" and "Black Swan," and now, on "The Wolverine," which will be an exciting take on that iconic figure and on the genre itself. We can’t wait to see what else Darren has in store for us.”

Mutant Villain Riptide Cast In X-Men: First Class The X-Men: First Class cast is really starting to shape up nicely. James McAvoy is Charles Xavier, across from Michael Fassbender as Magneto. Kevin Bacon, January Jones, Jason Flemying, Rose Byrne and others have also been cast, bringing together a top notch ensemble. Now here’s one more addition. Earlier today we received word from Blog De Superheroes that Álex González has been cast as 'Riptide,' a mutant who can spin at incredible speed, releasing calcium-growth from his bones at high speeds.

The character of Riptide first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #211, and has subsequently been featured in a number of X-Men comics. The villain was originally member of the Marauders, a team of villains brought together by the mutant thief Gambit at the request of Mister Sinister. He's since died on at least three occasions, only to have been brought back through cloning. As he was never featured during First Class's era of canon, this doesn't really reveal much on how the character will be utilized in the film.

Álex González has had roles in a number of Spanish language productions, and is probably best known for his part in the film Sunday Light.

X-Men: First Class will be directed by Mathew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Kick-Ass), and will be a prequel to the X-Men trilogy. The movie takes place during the 1960s and will parallel the history of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X using Xavier and Magneto. The original team, with the exception of Beast, will not appear.

Take your seats, True Believers, because things have continued to get more exciting for the cast of "X-Men: First Class."

The film, set to debut June 3, 2011, will follow the formative years of the X-Men and the relationship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a. Magneto.

Deadline Hollywood had news earlier this week that January Jones, the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actress who plays Betty Draper on AMC's "Mad Men," will play Emma Frost. Jones will undoubtedly bring a chilly air to the telepathic villainess-turned-X-Man also known as the White Queen!

Also reported was Rose Byrne, set to play Moira MacTaggert, Xavier's longtime love interest in the X-Men comics. Byrne, who stars in the TV series "Damages" also seen in "28 Days Later," "Sunshine" and "Knowing," will undoubtedly make things interesting for the young Professor X, played by James McAvoy.

The demonic Azazel will be brought to the silver screen by British actor Jason Flemyng. Having previously worked with "First Class" director Matthew Vaughan on "Layer Cake," "Stardust" and in a brief cameo in "Kick-Ass," the two have clearly developed a rapport that will continue here!

Mystery surrounds Oliver Platt's Man in Black-in fact, we can't even tell if he'll help or hurt our merry band of mutants! Given Platt's stellar performances in "Frost/Nixon" and Showtime's "Huff," though, you can bet he'll wow audiences no matter how malicious or heroic his character!

The young Zoe Kravitz joins the cast as Angel Salvadore, a character who first appeared in Grant Morrison's run on NEW X-MEN. Kravitz may not have many credits to her name just yet, but she's sure to make an impression on moviegoers and comics fans alike with her turn as this interesting mutant!

And on an even younger front, Bill Milner and Morgan Lily will portray Young Magneto and Young Raven, but as to just who the latter is we can't say!

The latest cast members will join James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Caleb Landry Jones (Banshee), Edi Gathegi (Darwin), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Lucas Till (Alex Summers) and Kevin Bacon, who will play an as-yet-unrevealed villain that will menace the young mutants.

Given the limitless roster of mutants in the X-Men universe I wouldn't be surprised if the casting process for X-Men: First Class really did go on until the end of time. As production gets ready to start at the end of the month we're getting a new announcement seemingly every hour, and now here are two big ones-- Deadline reports that January Jones will play Emma Frost and Zoe Kravitz will play Angel.

This news is confusing in many different ways, so let me start from the beginning-- we've been presuming for months now that Alice Eve had the role, to the point that she was included in nearly every casting roundup, but apparently she never made a deal and was handily replaced by Jones instead. Kravitz is far trickier-- not only is the character of Angel male and played by Ben Foster in X3, but the character was introduced as having had no contact with the other mutants in the past, and as we know this is a prequel. It's possible Kravitz won't be playing Angel at all, and instead this is another one of those casting misdirects we warned you about in July. Feel free to speculate all you like about who Kravitz might really be playing, but I'll wager something substantial she's stepping in for Halle Berry and playing Storm.

Two more names figure into the piece, one of which, Morgan Lily, we told you about earlier. The other is Bill Milner, a 15-year-old who will play a younger version of Magneto. No, I have no idea how a teenage Magneto is going to fit into this story, nor why we don't have casting for an equivalent teenage Professor Xavier. For all I know Milner is playing Cyclops and this is a total misdirect.

Despite reports that Alice Eve (“She’s Out of My League”) had all but been cast as Emma Frost aka The White Queen in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming “X-Men: First Class”, that turned out to not be the case after all. Premature casting, perhaps.

In any case, Deadline reports that “Mad Men’s” January Jones (left) has snagged the role from Eve. Emma Frost (below, in all her minimal clothing glory) is a potentially pivotal role in the film, if rumors prove true and Kevin Bacon, long announced as the film’s main villain, turns out to be a member of the Hellfire Club, of which Frost is a main member.

Also added to the cast: Zoe Kravitz as Angel, Bill Milner as Magneto Jr., and Morgan Lily as young Raven.

Two notables here: casting Kravitz as “Angel” is interesting, because the only Angel I know from X-Men lore is the male, winged flying one. So does this mean they’ve switched up Angel’s gender? (Zoe Kravitz is the daughter of Lenny Kravitz FYI.) Also, “Young Raven” could be a younger version of Mystique, whose real name is Raven Darkhölme.

The new faces join James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee, Lucas Till as Havoc, and Edi Gathegi as Darwin.

Earlier this week, other castmembers were announced, including Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, and Oliver Platt as an unidentified Man in Black.

Shooting on “First Class” begins next week in London.

Last month, it came as a bit of a surprise when it was reported that Kevin Bacon was in talks to play the "X-Men: First Class" villain. Which villain would he play? Would it be a known or unknown character?

These were the questions I posed to "X-Men: First Class" director Matthew Vaughn when I spoke to him earlier this month about the DVD release of "Kick-Ass," and while the filmmaker was careful not to reveal too much about Bacon's role, he did say that the actor being cast in the film wasn't the only surprise coming out of his involvement.

"I don't think it would be right to give that away, but he's really going for it," said Vaughn when asked about Bacon's character in the film. "He's really up for it, and he's going for it. I'm just thrilled that we could get him."

Vaughn heaped praise on the "Footloose" actor, and confessed to being a fan of Bacon's work "for as long as I can remember. Calling Bacon "a proper legendary actor," the director hinted that revealing anything more about the film's villain would spoil some big moments in the story — namely, his character's entrance.

"He will surprise you," said Vaughn. "I'll put it that way: He will surprise you with the kind of things he will do in this movie. He's not going to be what you expect at all when you first meet him in the film, you will be surprised that it's him."

Not too long after Bacon was confirmed for the film, we offered up our own suggestions regarding the role he should play. With even more "X-Men: First Class" casting news hitting the wire today, are we any closer to knowing which character Bacon will play?

Jason Flemyng has officially signed on for Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming superhero film X-Men: First Class, according to Empire. The British actor will portray Azazel, the father of Nightcrawler, in the X-Men universe. Here’s an excerpt from the site’s article.

“Matthew showed me my costume just the other day. Now I swore I’d never be in heavy make-up again, but this role is going to involve it. But at least they said, “Don’t worry, we’ll add the tail in post”. I am Azazel, and I can teleport by waving my arms [gestures like a cross between a flamenco dancer and a Bollywood star].”

The site was also able to confirm that Flemyng’s Azazel will be red, as opposed to Nightcrawler’s blue-skinned character. It wasn’t clear at this time how big Flemyng’s role in the film will be. In other news, apparently Rose Byrne will be playing the role of Moira MacTaggert, a scientist and an authority on genetic mutation. She’ll be the love interest of James McAvoy, who plays mutant telepath Charles Xavier. We thought this role had already been cast with Rosamund Pike set to play this character, but apparently that was premature. Thanks Production Weekly, for being wrong. Byrne is known for her role in the hit FX show Damages, but recently was seen as Jackie Q in Get Him to the Greek.

We are not clear on how big these roles will actually be in the film, but it seems as if Vaughn’s film will be very mutant-heavy with all the various castings happening. Presumably we will see Mystique being played by Jennifer Lawrence giving birth to her son, eventually dubbed as Nightcrawler.

We are still waiting on casting confirmations on mutants like Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey as part of the First Class, but also what other big ones will show up based on the origin set-up by the previous Wolverine film, such as Sabretooth and Gambit.

Jane Goldsman has penned the script, along with Ash Miller & Zack Stentz, based on the idea by Bryan Singer. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men. Regarding the film’s story, Vaughn said, “The story that Bryan Singer came up with is very, very smart … It’s very clever when you see how he has integrated the characters into the time period where the film is set. I’ll put it that way. I just don’t want to give it away. … It’s a very clever way of getting these characters involved in recent history, in recent world events.” It has also been confirmed that it is a prequel to the first three movies.

Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men: First Class" is only a few weeks away from shooting, but there are a number of key roles that still need to be cast. So far, the prequel has recruited an impressive list of actors including James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Kevin Bacon (possibly Mister Sinister), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicolas Hoult (Hank "Beast" McCoy) and Alice Eve (Emma Frost, aka The White Queen). Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Rose Byrne is in negotiations to join the group as mutant scientist Moria MacTaggert, a longtime character from the "X-Men" comic book series.

First appearing in Uncanny X-Men #96 way back in 1975, MacTaggert is a former flame of Xavier's who lead a Mutant Research Center on the fictional Muir Island off the coast of Scotland. A supporter of mutant rights, she has a long history with many of the "X-Men" characters including Jean Grey, Magneto and Banshee. How she will fit into the cinematic "X-Men: FIrst Class" remains to be seen.

Byrne is best known for her Emmy and Golden Globe nominated role in the series "Damages" (she recently received her second Emmy nod for the series), but has also appeared alongside Russell Brand in "Get Him to the Greek," "28 Days Later" and "Troy." She's currently shooting the comedy "Bridesmaids" for Universal.

Predators producer Robert Rodriguez is finally in negotiation to helm the big screen version of Deadpool.

Though rumours have been surfacing and then deep sea diving like a very confused killer whale, official reports have at last confirmed that the Planet Terror director is in talks for the flick.

Say the LA Times:

“After a few weeks of dancing, Rodriguez and studio Fox are negotiating. There's no deal yet, and the sides need to agree on a number of key points, but it's moved beyond the casual discussion stage and into the more substantive realm of deal points.”

What do we think of that? Well, hallelujah! Rodriguez would be perfect for Deadpool, his past works proving that he can handle both hyper-stylised action violence and tongue-in-cheek humour – two key ingredients that Deadpool would most certainly involve.

First, though, Rodriguez has to shoot (snore) Spy Kids 4: Armageddon, while Fox are also badgering him for ideas for a Predators follow-up.

One bit of definite good news, though: superhero hogger Ryan Reynolds is still attached to star, even though he’s currently busy wrapping up shooting Green Lantern while also looking for space in his busy schedule to film R.I.P.D…

Fox enrolled two mutants in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class this week. Yesterday, we learned Emma Frost will indeed be part of the "mutants old and new", though it looks like Rosamund Pike lost the job to Alice Eve. (I'm actually disappointed. As much as I dislike that character and am perplexed by her appearing in First Class, Pike was the perfect Emma.) Now, Latino Review reported that Caleb Landry might be playing Sean Cassidy, also known as the mutant Banshee.

Landry is a big unknown to the majority of moviegoers. You Friday Night Lights fans might recognize him (that show is becoming a go-to for mutants) but he's probably best known as being "that kid on a bike" from the end of No Country for Old Men. That probably qualifies him to fight anything mutant haters can throw at someone. If you talk to Anton Chigurh and survive, then what else is there?

Despite report that he has been cast as the lead actor in the 'Spider-Man' reboot, sources say Hutcherson has not been offered the part.

A lot of buzz come from the casting process of untitled Spider-Man reboot lately. Blue Sky Disney recently claimed Josh Hutcherson has been chosen to play Peter Parker in the upcoming film after he followed several test shoots. The site stated their sources informed that helmer Marc Webb and Sony bosses think the "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D" actor is the best for the role and Hutcherson has accepted the job.

However, on Wednesday, June 30, CHUD debunked the report, stating Hutcherson has not been offered the part. Though there is still a chance that he could get the offer, the site suggested it is unlikely that the 17-year-old star will be cast in the film. However, the site did not further mention a reason for this doubt.

Hutcherson, in the meantime, has confirmed that he joined audition to play the superhero in the upcoming "Spider-Man" movie. "I think a lot of people are auditioning and talking about it, so it's an honor to be considered on the same list with some of these actors that I'm up against," he told Coming Soon. "It would be an honor to play that role, it's a big thing, it's a total game changer. I really want to play a comic book hero."

While rumor about him playing in the web slinger film is yet to be over, CHUD has sparked another casting report mentioning Hutcherson's name. It is said that the depicter of Walter in "Zathura" is a favorite to play Cyclops in another big project, "X-Men: First Class".

"Spider-Man" reboot, which will see Peter Parker during his high school age, is slated for July 3, 2012 release in the U.S. Meanwhile, "X-Men: First Class", which will be directed by Matthew Vaughn and chart the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, secures June 3, 2011 as the U.S. release date.

X-Men: The First Class has landed itself a leading man for Magneto – and yep, Michael Fassbender will be the one donning the tin can helmet.

A few weeks back, Fassbender was reportedly considering whether or not to join First Class as Magneto, or take on other Marvel franchise Spider-Man in an unspecified villain role.

Well, it seems he’s made the right decision, opting to work with hot ticket Matthew Vaughn on his prequel comic book movie, which will dig into the past of our favourite X-Men to establish their origins – y’know, before Bryan Singer’s origins movies, that is.

Fassbender was no doubt enticed by the prospect of working with Vaughn, as well as James McAvoy, who will be sharing time with him as a younger version of Professor X.

The latest casting info on superhero prequel X-Men: First Class has Benjamin Walker taking on the role of Hank McCoy (aka Beast), alongside James McAvoy's Professor X and Rosamund Pike's Emma Frost. Rumors are still swirling that...

Amber Heard (Pineapple Express) could grab the role of Mystique, and Michael Fassbender might portray Magneto, but who knows. But that would definitely make for a smoldering cast in Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn's take on "young X-Men."

Walker's best-known for his stage work. He's current playing Andrew Jackson in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, at New York's Public Theatre, and was part of the 2005 cast of the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening.

According to XMF Ilan Eshkeri is in final talks to compose X-Men: First Class for Mattew Vaughn and 20th Century Fox. Eshkeri has worked with Vaughn before on Kick-Ass, Layer Cake and Stardust, so this news was expected. Eshkeri has also composed the scores for Ninja Assassin, Hannibal Rising and The Young Victoria, so he has range when it comes to crafting music.

Each of the X-Men films has had a different composer which has resulted in the X-Men not really having a theme or continuity with the music. Spider-Man had the ’swinging theme’. Batman has Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard doing their thing, so I think its about time the X-Men got a theme.

Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson was recently spotted with X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn creating buzz about a possible role in the mutant-filled movie.

When you're a director of comic book films, any actor friends you keep company with will always be suspect for future casting. When one of these "friends" starred as the title hero in one of your recent films, then any rendevouzis a potential audition, even if its for the birth of your child.

In this case its director Matthew Vaughn, who helmed Kick-Ass and the upcoming X-Men: First Class, and his pals Aaron Johnson and James McAvoy were spotted heading to the hospital to welcome Vaughn's baby girl into the world. Filmonic.com pointed out that Aaron Johnson could be a potential candidate for Cyclops, since James McAvoy is set to play Charles Xavier.

It might not be too far-fetched. As The Playlist stated, the age difference works. With James McAvoy at 31 and Aaron Johnson at 19, the foundation for a teacher/student relationship is set up quite perfectly. After all, Johnson was convincing as a superhero with zero powers, so playing one with optic energy beams shouldn't be too difficult for the actor.

Captain's log: let it be known his name is Sir Patrick Stewart now.

The thespian best known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation, earned a major promotion today, after Queen Elizabeth II officially made him a knight in a ceremony at Buckingman Palace.

The 69-year-old Stewart earned his title for doing more than dealing with Klingons and the Borg.

Considered one of Britain's greatest stage actors of his generation, Stewart is a core member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, which he joined when he was 26. He has appeared in more than 60 productions and like many of his legendary forebears at the company, the residency helped launch an enterprising career in TV and movies.

"It was an unlooked-for honor but as I grew up as a child, falling in love with the theatre and Shakespeare, my heroes were Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Alec Guinness," said Stewart.

"The knights of the theater represented to me not only the pinnacle of the profession but the esteem in which the profession was held. And now to find myself, to my astonishment, in that company is the grandest thing that has professionally happened to me."

Which is saying a lot, considering his Emmy and Tony Award nominations and such acclaimed roles stateside as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies and the leads in the TV movies A Christmas Carol and Moby Dick.

Matthew Vaughn - director of the brilliant, independently produced comic-book adaptation of Kick-Ass - has signed up his fellow Brit James McAvoy to play the young Charles Xavier (also known as Professor X) in X-Men: First Class which is currently in pre-production over at Fox Studios.

First Class will tell the story of the beginnings of the saga, before the extant X-Men trilogy, and therefore before Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr took on their alter-egos of Professor X and Magneto, before they became sworn enemies, when they were close friends who worked together with other mutants to protect the world from the greatest threat it had ever known.

Bryan Singer - director of the first movie will be producing and has conceived the story which should please fans ahead of this re-boot but what we all really want to know is whether McAvoy will be sporting a shiny shaved noggin a la Patrick Stewart who played Professor X in the trilogy.

Shooting kicks off in London this summer with the production eyeing up a June 3, 2011 US release.

Jane Goldman brought in to rewrite X-Men: First Class | Filmonic

As with most directors Matthew Vaughn likes to work with the same people. He has used Ben Davis as his cinematographer for all of his films, as well as composer Ilan Eshkeri. Another member of the Vaughn team is Jane Goldman who co-wrote both Stardust and Kick-Ass.

Last week we heard from Thor writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller who had been working with Bryan Singer on the latest draft of X-Men: First Class, so it seemed the scripting side of things was pretty much sorted. However, a recent tweet from Goldman’s husband suggests otherwise.

On May 5th Ross tweeted saying that his “wife has just taken on a big new exciting movie. So I’ll be doing the cooking for the next 10 weeks. Wish the kids luck…”. All of this suggests that Vaughn has brought in Jane Goldman to rewrite X-Men: First Class with him, which is pretty cool. As a duo they work well together (both Stardust and Kick-Ass have 76% on Rotten Tomatoes) so it is looking likely that we will be getting an above average X-Men movie!

No word on whether Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller still have script writing duties, or whether Jane will now be taking over as head writer. What we do know, however, is that 20th Century Fox is giving Vaughn creative freedom. With X-Men 3 and Wolverine Fox gave the writers notes and they had to form a script around them (hence the suckage), but now it seems Vaughn and Bryan Singer are in control of the story with Fox just providing the funds. I hope that’s the case anyway.

With filming expected to begin in less than 2 months time we can expect casting news over the upcoming weeks.

Since "Kick-Ass" director Matthew Vaughn previously declined to helm 20th Century Fox's "X-Men: The Last Stand," it was assumed that he was also going to decline the chance to helm "X-Men: First Class." It turned out that he did, but as soon as Fox started having talks with other directors, Vaughn reconsidered and returned to negotiate a deal.

The studio is now happy to announced that Vaughn has been signed to direct "First Class" and that the new movie will hit theaters on June 13th, 2011 (less than thirteen months from now). In addition, Fox has also unveiled the official plot synopsis for the film.

Plot: "X-Men: First Class," following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

As part of a recently-announced charity auction, one lucky winner will have their choice of a walk-on cameo in either X-Men: First Class, or X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2. The auction, which benefits Worldwide Orphans, is being managed by Charitybuzz, and the text at their site suggests Wolverine is the more likely option.

"Although cast info has not yet been announced, the next 'X-Men' film will likely find the series' previous stars returning for more action packed thrills," states the release. "This once-in-a-lifetime experience will also give the winner a chance to meet some of the actors who may be on set that day."

One thing to bear in mind: the Wolverine sequel starring Hugh Jackman looks to be further along in the production process than First Class, and the press release does say filming is anticipated to begin in 2011.

Either way, whoever submits the winning bid on April 1 will have helped children in need, and that’s more important than any movie role (unless it’s Batman, of course).

Whilce Portacio made his triumphant return to UNCANNY X-MEN last month, helping series writer Matt Fraction bring Kitty Pryde back to Earth in issue #522; now he will usher the X-Men into a new, post-Second Coming era when he illustrates an arc on the series beginning with July's issue #526.

The artist, who first co-wrote and drew Marvel's mutants in a brief but definitive run on UNCANNY X-MEN in the early 90's that introduced the character of Bishop, attributes his journey back to the fans.

"Every time I go to a convention fans are constantly asking when I'm coming back to the book that sent my career into warp drive," relates Portacio. "I am constantly bombarded by stories of how one of those issues [I drew] was the first comic book they ever read and got them hooked into comics. Just how many characters based on comic book titles can one man play? Ryan Reynolds, who is already hard at work on Green Lantern, is attempting to snatch the record, signing up to star as one half of a deceased cop team who keep ghosts in line for RIPD.

Producer Neil Moritz, talking to the ever-vigilant Frosty over at Collider, has revealed that Reynolds will take on two roles for him – one he’s already been announced for (body swap comedy The Change-Up for David Dobkin) and RIPD.

So what’s the 411 on RIPD? “It’s terrific - based on the graphic novel," says Mortz. "It’s about two cops, one recently dead and a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years that work on the Rest in Peace department - which is the police department of the dead. It takes place on a normal day and it’s about trying to keep the spirits quiet.”

HitFix has exclusively learned, from multiple sources, that Bryan Singer may not be directing "X-Men: First Class" despite recent press reports to the contrary, and that 20th Century Fox is actively searching for directors to step in and helm the film, with discussions with at least two other filmmakers as recently as last week.

The filmmakers that they're approaching now about directing "X-Men: First Class" are good names, guys who either have real experience in the comic book movie medium or who have heavy credibility with fan audiences. Names that would make fanboys happy from the first moment they're announced. I'm curious to see who else they meet with in the next few weeks now that their first few choices have passed. Those meetings, exclusively reported by HitFix, make it seem like no matter what public face they're putting on things, Fox is making plans as if Singer will not be free.

This is particularly interesting if you consider the timing of the interview with Geoff Boucher of The Los Angeles Times, who sat down with Lauren Shuler Donner and Bryan Singer for a story that's running in this weekend's Calendar section. Much has been made of the "confirmation" in the story that Singer's directing "X-Men: First Class." Here's the section of the story that is the most interesting:

"Before Singer can dive into casting, he has a rather large problem -- the fact that Warner Bros. has the filmmaker on the hook to direct 'Jack the Giant Killer.' Fox, flush with money from 'Avatar,' is eager to move forward with its mutant franchise in all of its permutations, so there are negotiations that need to be done.

Shuler Donner also has pitched Singer on doing a fourth installment of the previously established 'X-Men' franchise and Jackman had that lunch with Singer to coax him into a project as well, which may or may not be a 'Wolverine' film, which Jackman has said will be set in Japan and released in 2011. 'I wish I could be four people,' the director said with a moan. 'I could make everybody happy.'"

That "rather large problem" is an important one for Singer, and a pivotal one for Fox, who has a definite timetable for this "X-Men" reboot in mind. Singer is already scouting locations for "Jack The Giant Killer." He's deep into pre-production on the picture now, and it would seem almost actionable if he were to drop out at this point. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are counting on Singer to deliver this big-budget fairy-tale, and the earliest he's going to be free to start work on another large-scale picture will be 2012. There's no way Fox wants to wait for either "X-Men: First Class" or "Wolverine 2" for that long, so my guess is that Singer will be involved in those films as a producer of some sort, but not directing either one.

It sounds like "X-Men 4," the next full adventure of the original cast, is going to be the earliest place in the story arc where Singer's going to be able to get behind the camera again, which raises the question of why they sat for this story and what games are being played here. It's interesting... when Singer was waiting for Fox to make his deal on "X-Men 3," a process that took over a year due to some hardball negotiation, Warner Bros. took advantage of that and dangled the "Superman" in front of him. It was an awkward moment for Fox and led to some seriously difficult feelings between Singer and the studio. I'm sure Fox would be happy to undercut Warner on a big fantasy film by stealing Singer away, but this is not the same situation. Singer's already signed and in process on "Jack The Giant Killer," and I would hope he stays to see that one through before running back to the studio that treated him with such powerful contempt at least once before. Fox may be whispering sweet nothings to him now, but this is the same studio that had him thrown off the lot over "X-Men 3" a week before they had to allow him back on the lot to make the "House" pilot.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, but for fans who are celebrating his return to the series, you may want to put the hysteria on hold for a few, since it's far from a guaranteed thing at this point.

MTV talked to Green Lantern star Ryan Reynolds at the Sundance Film Festival where he revealed that he talks every day to Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about Wolverine spin-off Deadpool.

"Tonally, they got it," said Reynolds. "They just [understood 'Deadpool'] right off the bat. They're fans of the character and they were so excited. We couldn't have done any better [than Reese and Wernick]."

X-Men trilogy star Shawn Ashmore has spoken out about Bryan Singer's return to the film franchise with X-Men: First Class.

Ashmore, who played Iceman in the first three films - the first two of which were directed by Singer - admitted that it is unlikely he will ever get to reprise the role but has not given up hope.

He told Movieline: "Those films are always a blast to make, and working with Bryan is amazing. It’d be awesome to do another X-Men film and it’s too bad that there probably won’t be a role for me, but who knows?

"The universe is huge and they keep making those films. You never know - hopefully, I’ll get the chance to play Iceman one more time."

Ashmore added that fans should be confident about Singer's take on the early days of the X-Men.

He said: "Bryan is clearly very, very passionate about the X-Men films and the characters, so you know he’s going to a good job with whatever the story’s going to be."

‘Wolverine’ Sequel To Shoot In 2011?

According to Hugh Jackman, the sequel to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” may begin shooting in 2011.

"Wolverine's going to be back,” said Jackman during a backstage interview at the People’s Choice Awards. “He's going to Japan. We shoot that probably in a year, year-and-a-half, something like that."

As Jackman has previously indicated, the “Wolverine” sequel will be based upon the classic Chris Claremont and Frank Miller “Wolverine” story that finds Logan facing off against a Japanese crime lord and falling for his daughter, Mariko.

Last summer, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie signed on to pen the "Wolverine" sequel. While a director has yet to be named, Gavin Hood — the director of the first “Wolverine” film — has expressed his interest in returning for the sequel.

Back in October, “Wolverine” producer Lauren Shuler Donner hinted that the sequel may be filmed in Japan to capture a sense of authenticity. She also stated that the film would showcase several new fighting styles for Wolverine.

"Wolverine will be fighting in a different style to what we've seen before," said Donner. "Mariko's father has this stick-like weapon, so Wolverine will have to fight against that. There'll be samurai, ninja, katana blades, different forms of martial arts — mano-a-mano, extreme fighting."

In addition to the “Wolverine” sequel, Bryan Singer’s “X-Men: First Class” adaptation and Ryan Reynolds’ “Deadpool” spinoff are also in active production.

Much liked the ruled the comic shops of the '80s, the X-Men dominated the toy stores of the '90s. As kids grew disinterested in '80s mainstays like G.I. Joe and Transformers, the X-Men -- thanks to a very long-running and shockingly comics-accurate cartoon -- took over the space with countless Wolverines, Cyclopses, and Jean Greys (mostly Wolverines, though). Because of the show's longetivity and how much it borrowed from its source material, not only countless X-characters were made into toys, but Toy Biz scrambled to figure out new ways to repackage the main X-Men for more sales. ‘First Class’ Advice For Bryan Singer’s ‘X-Men’ Return

It's official, folks — Bryan Singer is returning to the mutant movie franchise he built up in the first place with "X-Men: First Class."

Singer's filmmaking journey has had its ups and downs — leaving the "X-Men" series for "Superman Returns," only to find that his vision didn't quite fly with mainstream moviegoers — but all of those experiences should only help the director as he settles back in for his take on Cyclops, Jean Grey and Professor Xavier's other gifted youths.

Still, here's hoping that Singer keeps the following few things in mind as he begins preparations on "First Class."

CHANGING HISTORY: While "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," set decades before Singer's first film, reflected the continuity of the initial "X-Men" trilogy, I hope that Singer realizes he doesn't have to adhere to that cinematic continuity. Story should come first and foremost, whether or not that means he has to break away from the universe established in the first three "X-Men" films.

ROSTER SHAKE-UPS: In an interview with Variety, Singer said that "First Class" would feature some familiar mutants, though he wasn't ready to reveal which ones. I'm all for the director swapping out some of the expected mutants — Cyclops and Jean, for example — if it serves the plot, but he shouldn't be afraid to include them, either. Singer doesn't have to be married to the previous casting of actors like Tim Pocock as Scott Summers, if he doesn't feel they have the right stuff to carry a film.

FALL OF THE LEADERS: Singer also said that "First Class" would depict the formative years of Xavier's school and his subsequent falling out with Magneto, the both of them aged in their late 20s, which essentially means that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen have to sit this one out. I'm fine with that, actually. It would be far too expensive to de-age Stewart and McKellen for an entire film; that budget could be spent far better elsewhere, which brings us to...

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: A major criticism against Singer's "Superman" was an extraordinary lack of action-packed moments. That same mistake cannot be made on Singer's return to "X-Men." This is a franchise with a lot of heart and story potential, yes, but let's not forget we're talking about mutants with mutant powers. Singer is an amazing action director when he lets himself go — that absolutely has to be the case on this film.

MOST OF ALL: This is a young "X-Men" tale, so Singer has the freedom to have fun and keep things light — while taking the subject matter seriously, of course. Lauren Shuler Donner's suggestion of taking a "Harry Potter" approach is an amazing guideline that the returning filmmaker should keep mindful of. However he wants to make this movie — new team members, recasting characters, what have you — the most important thing Singer has to do is have some fun and make an enjoyable movie.

Singer Talks X-Men: First Class Director Bryan Singer is back with the X-Men, but what does that mean for the next installment in the franchise, X-Men: First Class. While Singer won't go into too many details, he did tell the folks over at the Heat Vision Blog what they could generally expect from the upcoming prequel, and what potential he thinks it holds.

Heat Vision: What is the story?

Singer: I can’t tell you that; it’s secret. But it’s basically about the formation of the X-Men. How they began and the relationship between a young Xavier and a young Magneto.

Heat Vision: Do you think the X-Men can exhaust themselves? You've got the original three, you've got Wolverine, you've got a Deadpool and Magneto in the works ...

Singer: This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust.

But no, I don’t see an exhaustion. The X-Men universe is boundless. These are great characters. And as young characters, they are quite different than the characters we have seen in the contemporary movies.
